Reducing the weight of a Mustang.

I would love to shave off 1000 lbs. but this is not realistic without spending big dollars on carbon fiber this n that. How about a more obtainable goal of 250 lbs.? Replace the front seat with a light weight racing seat (no passenger seat) and remove the rear seats, ac, spare tire, jack, lug wrench, some of the carpeting and anything that doesn't have a purpose. What is the ballpark gain for weight reduced? 100 lbs equals 10 horsepower gained? Not really added hp but there is less weight to propel down the moway. Fell free to throw out suggestions.

Why are you wanting to shed weight? For the drag strip?

@Grabber Blue5.0 -No particular reason other than to give it more get up n go. A different approach versus tunes, exhaust, intakes etc.

Light weight brakes, wheels etc etc. You can remove the front sway bar and the axle weights. You have a full weight premium C/S though so you're already off to a bad start.

No nav or glass roof. I'm assuming the glass roof is heavier. I don't really need heated leather seats, the rears are going first.

No interior, no options, lexan glass, k member, manual steering, no sway bars, CF wheels, DS, Shedding weight is about the cumulative affects of losing many small weights. Usually nothing big. The glass roof, for example adds a whopping 40 pounds to the car, becaue it isn't glass, it's actually high impact polycarbonate plastic. Back seat, with everythng? 35 pounds.

Stock wheels are heavy as hell, as is the stock K member and stock front seats but, the rest of the losses will be incremental and you will turn the car into something you may not like or want to drive in the end, if you go hard at this.

I've lost about 100 lbs, and my car looks completely stock.
And most of the weight loss I did was in unsprung and/or rotation mass, so the effect is more like 4x the normal weight loss.

Here are my changes:
upgrade to Brembos w/ 2-piece front rotors -5 lbs x 2 corners = -10
2-piece Girodisc rear rotors -4 lbs x 2 = -8 lbs
lightweight wheels - 9 x 4 = -36+ lbs
tubular radiator support = - 10 lbs
Steeda billet LCA's = - 6 lbs
1-piece alum. driveshaft = - 20 lbs
GT500 axleback exhaust = - 6 lbs
steeda adj. panhard = - 1/2 lb
soundtube removal = -1/2
TOTAL = 97 lbs weight loss

All of that with out sacrificing any comfort. And meanwhile improving performance A LOT. The wheels and driveshaft where the biggest difference. I could actually feel the difference after those mods. The expensive (b/c of all 2-piece rotors) brake mod I could only really feel the difference in better stopping power.

I was thinking about doing these next: http://www.jpcracing.com/2010-2014-f...pport-package/ - 24 lbs or at least the front one, as thats where the car needs to lose weight the most.

Comparatively, these cars aren't heavy when you look at its direct competition.

My old car was fully loaded and on fumes t was 3680, with ME in it. I'm 150. My new 14 is an auto and is about 40 pounds heavier with the same option load. Finally the new Camaro has shed its pork but the Challenger is 4000+, ludicrous. My old 74 Trans am with iron, steel and fibreglass from the front to the back, weighed 3700 with wind up windows, no ac, or power options of any kind, hehe.

@c_rizzle, thanks for your list of light weight mods.
@5LHO, was thinking the same, if I go full tilt on this endeavor will I enjoy a stripedd down interior? I certainly don't need back seats though.

Vented Cf hood cost me 1600. 20 lbs saved and helps cool the engine.

Gotcha. Keep in mind, pulling things means nothing works, codes get thrown, weirdness. Stuff doesn't go back in right, etc. It's not a race car....it is it? You tell us.

It really isn't worth taking apart you car to save about 100 pounds. Wheels and driveshaft would probably be the best thing you can do. Tires usually differ by a couple of pounds, but you start spending a lot for little gain. Gears would be good way to feel a little more get up and go. Remember some day you may want to sell it and you don't want to ruin your resale either.

@2013 RedMustang, Gears are in the works, currently has 3.31's, 3.55's would wake it up.

Going from 3.31's to 3.55's would be a waste of money. Honestly your approach to all of this isn't very well thought out.

Along with the axle weights, who needs any tires or wheels too?

Remove everything! just start with the empty shell & rollcage, then only add back in what is absolutely necessary... (no extra wires, wiring harnesses, insulation, AC, radio, etc.)

I've done driveshaft & wheels and will do brakes next, but not much more for me. Research is your friend. I found Optic Armor for glass replacement $500.00 windshield.

I'm think about adding a supercharger next winter, this might be ideal, since the bumper has got to come off anyhow.
