N2O malfunctions

Crap....I go to the track, loaded up with my 100 shot NX plate kit, tune and slicks.

I get one hit in, which is an ok start at 11.7 at 120 and the next time, the nitrous solenoid sticks open and fills the friggin' manifold with jug. It was open the whole way down the return road to my spot. Great, potential kaboom.

So I pull the intake tube, prop the throttle plate open and let it air out for a couple hours. I change to N/A tune and run the rest of the night.

I just bought this kit over the winter, brand new. I guess I'll be calling NX up to see what can be done. I rule out an electrical problem because the throttle sensor reads ok and the problem happens immediately when I turn on the activation switch, which suggests the solenoid is stuck open. I've blown the line out, the jet and the solenoid as best I can.

Not impressed.

Spray & Pray...

You were unlucky & lucky at the same time. Glad to hear you didn't toast the Yote.

My son-in-law races nearly every weekend, and blew his engine on a faulty 50 shot kit. He got about 20 runs with it. Then with no changes... BIG BOOM... He's done for a while now.

Yeah, that's great, something is telling the nitrous 'noid to switch on and now it's smoked from the continuous operation. Great. Brand new kit. That's racing.

Figured it out. The Throttle position sensor switch was sending the go signal to the solenoids all the time so, it fried the solenoid. Thankfully, it fried the nitrous one and not the fuel one but, this could have gone bad and cost me a motor. I'll be chatting with NX tomorrow.

Are you thinking this is from a faulty sensor or do you think it's wiring related?

Not wiring, my work was perfect. The sensor itself malfunctioned and sent 12v to the solenoids all the time.

It was great to get back to my pit box, hear the hissing as the nitrous flowed into my now shut off motor and know I was just sitting on an IED. I'm not new to nitrous so, I didn't try to start the motor. I got the flow stopped, pulled the intake and propped the throttle open and let it air out for an hour or so.

Then it was back to NA for the rest of the night.

It did do 11.7 at 120 on the first hit, which means about 519 hp, thus making 99 out of the 100 horse it was supposed to be making. So, the tune from BBR was not an issue at all.

Which plate kit do you have. The one with the Lightning solenoids or the one with the integrated ones?

'cept that the part that failed (the TPS autolearn box) is common to both kits.

Thanks for the kick while I'm down here....

Never had one problem out of the TPS on any of my vehicles. And all I have ever used is nitrous express. Except for my truck.

And it's not a kick it's the truth that integrated plate design is not the best

Well, I am not spraying a three stage 600 horse hit. It's a 100 shot.

Regardless, of your experience, in my case, the problem lies with the tps system. It took me a while to decipher the problem but, that's what happened here.

Hopefully NX makes it right.

See, here's the thing, Rap: Your words aren't adding anything to this thread. The failure mode here has nothing to do with the type of solenoids or what kit was chosen. What happened here would have fried a lightning solenoid, too.

Fwiw, there is a place in the lineup for both kits. Hell, I chose this be my goals are low and the plate is better than the alternative, a nozzle style kit.

I'd prefer you to subtract something: the attitude and condescension that's infecting your responses and offering nothing to this thread. It's not my first day here, I've shot hundreds or pounds of nitrous through engines in 30+ years in this hobby and thus, I don't need to be "schooled" on my choices. I bought the right amount of technology for my goals and had an unusual failure mode that I hope NX will make right for me. This thread might be useful to someone down the road or it might not but, it sure won't by turning into a pissing match about which kit is "crap".

Just talked to NX. They said they've never heard of this happening but, they are going to take the parts in, check 'em out and they will make it right either way. Can't argue with that kind of CS. I'll pull the plate and the TPS box tonight and send it to them.

I've been around for awhile and so has 5LHO. I see his posts here and on other sites and he certainly knows what he'd talking about. So if he knows what exactly failed then that's good enough for me and should be for anyone else. And anyone that can put a car with the Procal tune into the 11's has my respect.

Good deal - glad they're looking into it for you!

And I couldn't agree more with your response to the "off topic" comments
