Catless X pipe Legality Question

I recently bought a Catless X pipe and was gonna Have an exhaust shop do the install. That being said, is it legal for them to do a midpipe install that doesn't have cats on it? Might be a stupid question but I was just curious.

It's not legal to drive on public roads.

It's not illegal to have or have installed however.

Should be noted that it doesn't stop people from doing it. Tons of people do it. But you can be pulled over for it, and will get a ticket depending on the cop.

My muffler shop won't even touch my cats, but after enough begging they said they could do it after hours lol.

I mean I'm well aware it being illegal doesn't stop people from doing it, I just wasn't sure if it was illegal to remove them or just drive on the road without them.

Yeah just illegal to drive on public roads, if your state has emissions testing it's clearly not the path to follow. If it was a strict track car no one would bat an eye.

Some shops are hesitant, most I've ever dealt with do it and fabricate the pipe where the cats would be as well.

I'm NC most shops will not touch the cars unless you have the car towed in and it's basically a race car. If the car is driven to the shop then you really can't claim it's only used for off public road purposes.

It's illegal to drive faster than the posted limits or to not come to a full stop at stop signs or before turning at a red light but people do it all the time.

This the saying "it's only illegal if you get caught" lol

Technically it is illegal in every state to drive a catless car on public roads, it is a federal law. However, some states enforce it, some don't. If you live in a state with emissions testing you're going to have a rough time when inspection time rolls around. I don't really hear of it happening often, but IF you ever did get ticketed for not having cats, it is one of the biggest fines you can get while driving. Thousands.

According to Title II of the EPA Clean Air Act (Enacted Jan 1 1988) there are multiple regulations concerning the use or misuse of aftermarket catalytic converters, or the removal and/or modification of a stock catalytic converter. According to various parts of Section 203, all aftermarket catalytic converters must be EPA certified, and your car must have a gas conversion device of some manner. If not, both you and the installer are punishable of a Federal Offense by Section 205 (a). The operator's fine can be no more than $2,500 and the installation agency no more than $25,000.

As much as I dislike the law I've decided I'm going to obey it. Can't afford a thousand dollar ticket. Speed limits and stop signs on the other hand, well we will see. Haha

I live in Albuquerque also. Just a reminder every 2 years emission test here. Some of the places do a visual plus.

Most of them have an option for either catted or catless mid pipes (you always need to buy midpipes with headers, sometimes they come with them)

Some states when they do emission testing look under the car with a mirror to make sure you have them.

You could have it done and more than likely get away with it, I don't see many cops getting down on their knees to take a peek under your car, but you definitely will not pass inspection.

Yeah I'm in Albuquerque too and know a lot of people that are catless, I think you'd have to be having a ****ty day for a cop to pull you over here for a exhaust that's too loud, and even then I highly doubt they'd give you the max fine without giving you at least one warning. I'm originally from Ca and the cops out here are way more relaxed.

Just get them and lower your car just enough to where they can't look under

Another thing to consider is my car absolutely stinks without the cats. I smell like gas after driving the car. I have had catless cars before but for some reason this one smells very strong without them. No exhaust leaks i have checked. It might be the tune with the supercharger but im considering putting the cats back on in the near future. I removed them because i was afraid of them melting over time with boost.

You'll need your 02's turned off in the tune so they don't throw codes.

Depends on the state and even then emissions may not be required. I live in PA, near Pittsburgh, Allegheny, Beaver, Westmorland counties all require emissions testing, but just north of me, in butler county, its not required. I'm not sure if you turn of the rear cats if it set a no test status or if they can tell when they hook the machine up. I know they plug in in PA and send all that info to the state. I don't drive my car in the winter or when it rains, so I put less than 5 K on and it gets exempted. in PA < 5k allows it to be exempt. They charge me 10 bucs to put the sticker on, but its 20 to run the emissions and agin, in PA that all gets uploaded to the state. They don't generally look under the car. I woory cause I have the notorious two minute exhaust leak till the cat to h pipe connections heat up.
