First time at the drag strip today

Went to Great Lakes Dragaway in Union Grove, WI for my first track day today. 2011 Mustang GT Premium 6MT with 63k on the clock and stock 235/50R18 all-season tires, 32PSI. Only mods are a BAMA 93 Race tune and FRPP axlebacks. Removed the spare tire and rear seat for the race.

Ran 6 passes with my first being a 12.9xx and my best a 12.74x @ 113. DA was around 2200 so with better air I likely would have been closer to 12.5x-12.4x.

Overall I'm very happy with how it ran today. Already looking at some 15" rims and DRs for the next trip LOL. I figure if I can get my 60' times down to the 1.80 or 1.7x range, with some good air and a little luck I should be knocking on the door to 11's.

Jake

My best time on street tires was 12.9.
So I wouldn't complain!
Get a slick as drag radials are better with the auto, slick will absorb some of the launch.
Also, surprised you didn't get any wheel hop. A set of lower control arms will help as well.

Thanks! I have a set of LCAs waiting to put on, but I was surprised too that I didn't get any wheel hop, just some spin.

I know slicks are better with the MT, but I'm leaning towards the DRs just for ease of being able to drive them to/from the strip. It's not a DD for me, but I will put on probably 6-8k a year. Now after looking around I'm kinda leaning towards getting some new 18" rims (mine are pretty rough with curb rash from the previous owner(s)) and sticking Nitto 555Rs on the back. I figure if I get two years out of a set between street/strip time that's good enough for me.

I drive slicks to the track, 40 miles, no problem. I don't even air them up. Believe me, the diff between slick and DR on the MT is extremely noticeable, as is the reduced strain on the drivetrain.

I used to drop clutch the MT in my old car at about 4500 on slicks and get 1.5-1.6 sixty foots all day long.

Not bad at all.
I go to Great Lakes as well, usually on Thursdays since they prep the track really well. I have a set of drag radials on V6 wheels that you could test out if you wanna meet up at the track some time.

Sweet, hope to run into you there! I want to get there every 2-3 weeks or so. Usually go with a buddy who has a '96 formula putting down 525hp. Pretty hard to miss, all black with yellow stripes/accents.
