oil consumption

So purchased my 11 GT about 2 months or so ago ,I've put 5,000 miles on it
Luv the car , picked up some Mobil 1 to do my 1st oil change this coming weekend
yesterday when i started it up in the A.M. it started clacking but seemed to go away after the oil pressure went up , So i did the diagnostic check and it still said oil 100%
went to work got some Motorcraft oil to dump in to get me to the weekend
5 quarts later it was on the stick , WTH ??
could it be using that much oil ? or did the dealer forget to fill it ?
oh and now the clack wont go away

the olm (100%) is the amount of expected life in the oil.....not how much oil is in it.

I hope you have a wtty on it, If so bring it back and don't volunteer that it needed 5 qts of oil.

ya its got a warranty ,we will see how that goes , ,there going to look at it Monday
it shouldn't have been 5 quarts low , why not tell them ? that's an issue ,it shouldn't be using that kind of oil ,either that or they for got to fill it ?
and I got NO low oil warnings or anything , I found out today the oil life should go down with the mileage , so that's not working either

Yeah, what to say. You've ghosted the motor because you didn't check fluids when you got a used car and for a further 5000 miles. Who knows what it had in it when you got it?

Good luck with the warranty, given the age of the car it's gotta be one of those used car dealer warranties, right?

Maybe whoever did the last oil change didn't realize it holds almost 9 quarts.

It holds 8 but I'm sure that person must have figured out it held more than three....

No but I could see a used car lot mechanic dumping 5qts in it due to either being ignorant or cheap. Then you have driven it for 5000 miles which could have easily consumed a quart which is not uncommon or possibly more from internal parts not being properly lubricated and that would put it right there.

Oil consumption

FYI, most Manufactures use 1 qt/750 miles as the excessive limit. Above that they won't take issue.
Look for leaks as most vehicles today don't burn oil.
I don't think I've had a vehicle that used more than a quart every 3-5 k.
Usually they are down less than a quart when I do an oil change.
The mustang hasn't used any in 5 k

Here's my theory on Coyote oil consumption, based upon owning two Coyotes in a row, the first stick and the second auto:

I believe that it is the time spent in the overrun (compression braking) that leads to the oil consumption. My auto, being auto, is frequently upshifting and running at lower rpms than my old 3.73 stick car was and doesn't compression brake nearly as much or as hard as the old stick did, even when I use sport mode.

The auto doesn't use a drop, the stick would pretty regularly drink a quart or two between oil changes and put some small volume into a catch can every week. Both engines made great power and full compression so, there were no mechanical issues.

Actually, I read the engineers made the oil pan 8qts so that we could go longer between oil changes.

idk if it's a good idea to mention the 5 qts low or not, but keeping oil in it (and checking it!) is your responsibility. Not trying to slam ya but I would not want to give them an excuse. good luck and keep us posted on what they say.

my old 3 valve had 130,000 miles on it it would use about a quart in 5,000 miles , this car has 60,000 on it i didnt expect it would use any and with an 8 quart pan i figured it was fine , it has that oil life meter on the diagnostic check and i actually would run that at least once a week ,and it constantly showed 100% i didn't know it was supposed to count down as i've never had one of those before, i thought it was telling me it was 100% full , stupid me for not knowing ? that was not working for sure , the oil presssure was at 80% of the gauge ,and NO warning lights either , so i'm sure the system wasn't working properly

update : took it in for service yesterday and it didnt make it , engine wen't KABOOM!!! on the way there , about 15 miles from the dealer , waited 8 hours for a tow from Ford roadside assistance , what a joke
at least the dealer gave me a free loaner
hope fully a get a new engine and not a bandaid on the old one
oil pressure was great the whole time ,etc ... the tap got louder all of a sudden and then it made a weird noise and shut off

i don't know why not , no car should use 5 quarts of oil , no car , i purchased a problem , and they should know about it , i have all the service records ,all the work was done at that dealer all oil changes were done there ,between 5 and 8 thousand mile intervals , and one just before i purchased it , so who knows what happened , in my opinion the tech forgot to fill it
only thing that makes sense to me , his girlfriend probably was texting him at work ,or it was lunch time or whatever ?

Stampede, it sounds like it's going as well as it can. The loaner is a great start and with the blown engine while that sux at least they can't tell you "it's normal" good luck and stay on the dealers friend list.

Just adding my 2 cents.
When I picked up my 2012 in early 2014 it was also about 5 quarts low. I didn't notice it for about a week (my fault for not checking fluids and it was my first "new" car) when the engine started making a little ticking noise but no warning lights or anything. I just did a full oil change and it went away. Someone also had the bright idea of putting loc-tite on the drain plug. Found that when I couldn't get it out easily. From that point on I always had to add about a quart of oil between changes. All the research I did said it was fairly normal for a coyote motor. The strange part is I haven't had to add a drop since I installed long tube headers. Maybe this whole issue is something with Ford tuning.

update :
my dealer in putting a used engine in , hopefully its good
my engine had 76000 miles on it ,the used one has 42000
guess they didn't want to drop to much money into it ,considering I got it for $17500
was hoping for a new or reman

Under warranty I would not have settled for less than a new crate engine.

Had he bought the car new he would have a better case for it. The case could be made now that what he is getting is as good or better than what he had. He doesn't have to accept it if it's not a good motor. Though hopefully it is and your saga is over. A junkyard motor is a crapshoot let's see how it plays out.

New motor

I agree, junk yard motor is a crap shot and the engine swap will probably bring up a few nuisances as well.
My advice, look to trade for a 12-14 with a little lower miles and sell them on I got all the bugs worked out with the new motor, its got 42 K not 72.
You might get a deal on one that some one had to have the ecco boost or something.
But don't be in a hurry, time is your friend! Plus you can flog the hell out of this one and claim it was a junk motor to start with!
Win Win!
Obviously it worked well for you sticking to you guns!
When you go into negotiations you don't have to get everything to win!
Also, getting the last word doesn't mean you won!

Mines always burned oil. At oil change time I just get two 5-qt jugs because it goes through about a quart and a half to two quarts through the life of an oil change.

I have 6 cars, and the only one that sits dead on the stick the whole time is my 88 S10.

I rode the dealer's Escape for a month waiting on them to rebuild the trans in my last S197 so, I hear ya. Very convenient little box that thing was, way better than the Fukus I had for the first couple days.

I'm usually really good at that , but I guess I figured a low mileage car that just had an oil change at a Ford dealer would be good to go , my bad
put about 800 miles on this engine already and I've checked it 3 times ,lol
