After 3 tries in 2 days my local shop can't replace my stock 3:15 gears to 3:55 gears without breaking shims or creating rear end hum ? Are they missing something?
He pre-empted me. Was thinking the same thing, but went ahead and read further, then saw his post. I've set up gears for a mighty long time, "cutting my teeth" on a Dana 44 in my old man's '55 Mercury, then along came the Ford 9" in '57.........
I wonder though what is meant by "crushing shims"?
EDIT: Wanted to say it in a softer way: They don't know what they're doing.
The clearance between the gears are a well known issue when installing them. Even if you have to tow it....take it somewhere else where they have experience installing Ford rear end gears. Done correctly, you will not have the noises you do now.
