Help a noob, please

Just got my first fox body Mustang . 1988, 2.3, 5spd, all stock with just 58,000 miles. Super nice condition in & out, except for faded paint. Seriously got it from an 82 year old lady. Runs & drives great, wanting to "pep" it up a bit. I don't have much in the way of funds, so no turbo (yet).

Could anyone give me ideas or tips & tricks for these Mustangs? I already have a cold air intake & cat back system in the works for this. I did those things to my truck with positive results, so I figure can't be a bad thing here either. I have bigger long term plans for the 2.3, just looking for more power in the mean time while I save up for bigger mods.

I ultimately want to turbo the 2.3....anybody can do a 5.0 swap & get power, I love making big power with 4 cylinders. (Used to hop up Toyota 4s in years past).

Thanks in advance. I definately know my way around the garage & love to wrench, so the labor part of it is no problem.

Ranger roller cam a direct replacement?
I've ported and port matched intakes before so I'm not afraid of that mod.
Also is the 5.0 T/body a direct bolt in? All plug & play or is a wiring mod needed?
Thanks for the input

Yes a direct replacement . Just make sure u take the lifters and roller arms too when u find it. Only 91-94 will work . Other years have different lifts unless u port head . And the 5.0 tb is not direct. Bolt on but close . Just a lil bit of drilling use the gaskets to guide you. Also make ur life easier by gettin the stick throttle because your car is stick instead of the automatic because the bracket is a lil different for our throttle cables . Get the 94-97 tb . Connectors are the same too. Its a fun little project .

U need the lifters I think and the 5.0 throttle body is a direct swap

Great! I will be hitting the junk yards this weekend.
I knew there had to be some easy & interesting upgrades on the cheap.
Appreciate the input, thanks.
I'll keep you updated on the progress

Cam swap

Do you know the total lift of the Ranger cams. I believe the 88 stock is 390. Thanks.

Ok, more questions already...I get asked what size throttle body do I want when shopping for one....so my question is what size do I want/need? I didnt realize the stock 5.0 came with different size T.B.s.

I havent been able to find a dead ranger in my local junk yards, but will broaden my search to the pick-a-parts in Indianapolis soon...New cam/lifters/rockers is more than I paid for the car...thats funny

I understand the pinto/mustang II header will fit...any other suggestions on a header?

Also do I need bigger injectors with the bigger throttle body? I have never modded a fuel injected engine before, always carbs.

Thanks again for all the input

No u don't need better injectors it works fine . Always have in mind even though u upgrade injectors or fuel pumps etc. U need to have an adjustable fuel regulator or all those parts won't work how u want em to work. And throttle body I believe is 62-70 mm bigger=more airflow but too much can also slow u down. 65 is about right. And the headers are the ones uve mentioned . I found em on eBay $150

Right on. If I cant find the cam I shouldnt do the TB by itself, right?

I made a cold air intake & got a hi-flow air filter. When the header arrives I will be putting on a Flowmaster 40 series with no cat.

I have also read to unhook the knock sensor for static timing.

So I'm still looking for the Cam & such in the junk yards...thought it would be eaiser to find.
The cold air intake, fresh tune, cleaning of the intake & the free flow exhaust really made a difference. Still not a race car but hesitation is gone, sounds much better & has some more get up & go
