'93 LX ratrod?

I have a '93 LX and I'm thinking about making it into a ratrod. Where should I start and how should I go about making it look as bad-*** as possible?

Whoa... I want a rat rod, not a trash rod. That thing idles like a Evinrude. I've had a few people tell me to take a grinder to the paint and get it down to bare metal as a start. Where would I go from there?

Primer or let it rust and then clear coat it

I only have 2 in my album. I'm going to take more in the morning. What should I do engine-wise to give it that rat rod feel and look? I'm looking for suggestions and ideas of what you guys think would make a bad-*** ride. You guys are the Mustang Bosses!

I like that idea. May be a winning idea. Keep the 2.3?

They look like 1980's Taurus wheels......but they aren't. You need some wheels liken this but with fat white walls.

I've scoured the internet and have yet to find a Mustang rat rod, so I don't really have anything to base my design off of.
Maybe it's time to make a new genre in Mustang history!

Chop top if its a coupe, or jsut cut the roof off and half the windshield. Lower it.. a lot. Remove any glass that's not nessicary. White walls, set of racing seats and a diamond plate steel dash, satin black paint with the edges scraped up and starting to show rust, and louddd exhaust. Or, send me pics and where you're located and I might just buy it as a project lol old trucks, willys jeeps, and some of the old business sedans are the best for ratrods. A fox may be doable but it'll take serious creativity to make it not look cheesy. Either way, I'm following this, I wanna see what you come up with man.

I'll be keeping you guys posted on the progress. It's my daily driver, so I'll be doing it as I get days off. My first step is the paint. It's really humid and muggy here, so it'll take no time to get that nice rusty look to it.

I also have another question. When I start the car, there is a strong smell of gas coming from under the hood. The oil also has a gassy smell to it, and I just had the oil changed about a month ago. It just smells like it's running rich. Any idea what to do about this?

Wouldn't hurt to check your fuel rail for leaks as well.

Here's and idea, go to a junkyard and find a set of iron wheels. You can paint them black or red, whatever and then when you buy tires add a set of Portawalls white walls to them. They are the cheaper alternative to Coker tires.

Rat rod is whatever you want it to be. Mismatch parts from.other cars or anything else if like. I always call mine that. Starting to run like crap again, but used to run much better tgan looks. Bought used done nothing cosmetically. Previous owner primer grey..not good job. Half of trim missing. I have all intentions of taking off and smoothing out one day. Fenders only attached along hood. Probe or sho front end mark viii rear lol.

So, I get paid on Thursday. I am going to start the painting process on Friday. Should I use just plain ol' matte black 98 cent spray paint and cheese cloth to protect the areas I don't want painted?

It would work. Watch what kind of matte black you use and the prep and conditions you use it in, some of them will leave spots that look wet still if you put it on to thick too fast

Is your rat rod theme just going to be exterior or do you plan to carry it out through the interior as well?

The interior is going to get the rat rod treatment as well.

Cool. Start collecting metal signs, vintage ads and old license plates. They make great door panels and floor boards. That's real popular amongst the rat rodder community. I've seen a license plate headliner on one rat rod truck that looked pretty badass.
