2.3 Distributor problems

I have a 1990 2.3 LX mustang. During normal driving, the engine abrubtly shut off. After trouble shooting for some time, I removed the distributor and noticed that the gear on it was badly stripted (3 or 4 gears). What could have caused this? Is this something that is common periodically in these engines. Thanks for the help and suggestions. Puzzled

Normal wear and tear, it just happens, some go a lifetime without breaking and some dont. The dist is designed to wear out first, which is a good thing.
As far as this particular engine having a known issue for this? I have no idea.
