What is the trick to getting the plain white knob off? I figure I am either a week old man, or stupid as hell...

I ruined mine taking it off...factory used locktite which makes it a pita. Wouldn't budge no matter what. Ended up wrapping apiece of rubber around it (like a bicycle tire tube) and then used a big pair of channel locks to take it off. I knew I would screw it up but just wanted the damn thing off, lol.

I bought a strap wrench @ Home Depot, made by Husky, rubber strap, I think less than $ 10.
It's still work, but you can get it off......without destroying a $ 70 GT500 factory knob.

Strap wrench wouldn't budge mine, guess they went overboard on the locktite.

Yep. I ruined my stock GT knob because it was crazy right on there. Ended up cutting the material away to get to a hard plastic part then putting a pipe wrench to it. And even then it was quite the job to get it to break loose. I've had an easier time with 30year old rusted and melted nuts on seized bolts out here in the Bering sea on buoys during repairs.

So I bought a small strap wrench and broke it, bought a bigger one and still can't get the knob to break free. There has got to be a way to get it off without ruining it. Maybe i will just go outt and buy a short throw and put this shift knob on that.

Is the short throw worth it? Is there that much difference between stock and an aftermarket?

You're still gonna need to remove the knob to be able to remove the center console where you'll be able to install the short throw

I know mine was pretty stiff, but I was able to remove it. It really sucks that it's that stuck on there.

Maybe pad and tape the jaws of a pair of channel locks. I destroyed the one in the 97 cobra I had. It went to a good cause.

I tried to get an aluminum knob with the cobra emblem engraved in it for my 2012, but it didn't fit. I'd love to find one that does!
