Lug Nuts yup really

Well I am getting ready to get my car out of hiding. My plan is to change the oil and give it a really good cleaning. I will be taken off all the tires and cleaning the rims brakes etc. The only other time these rims have been off the car since I have had it was at the dealer when they had to replace my rims. When I got it back the lug nuts started to rust. They replaced them with new ones, and I have not had a problem since. Now my question is simple. I will be using only hand tools to brake them free no impact tools at all. Should I be worried about them rusting after I am done? Is there a certain lug wrench made that won't scratch them? Or am I worrying for nothing?

Now for the dusting of snow to go away so I can get to work on this.

If you don't hit them with an impact like you said you shouldn't have a problem. I have a special socket I use that has a protective coating on the outside to avoid marring the wheels. But once you crack them, just use your fingers to loosen them the rest of the way. I haven't had any issues with mine rusting and I have taken my wheels off prob 4-5 times since I've owned mine in October, and put 12k on it.

Is that what makes them rust? Scratching them from taking the tires off?

Yes that and they are made really cheaply now a days.

I will try the masking tape and see how that does. I have never had a car I worried about the lugs before seems sort of strange

Lol. I'm with you tho. Anytime that coating gets messed with, it seems to be ugly. I'd love to have set that wouldn't do that.

I hope you have a "TORQUE WRENCH"

When putting the wheels back on they really need to be torqued to 100 Ft Pds. You can get a good Torque wrench at Lowe's, Sears, or a cheap crap one from Harbor Freight.

Well had the front two off and back on no problems. Cleaned the back of the rims for the first time since I have owned it. All I can say is, it really was not as bad as I figured it would be. I cleaned the brake calipers checked the rotors and pads etc. Everything looks Great. I applied some wax on the back side f the rims and cleaned the wheel well really really good. What a difference it makes, now to clean the rest of the car.
