| Just bought an 01 cobra....suggestions/headsup
Just bought an 01 Cobra convert. was wondering if any cobra owners can give me a heads up on what I need to expect in maintenance, repairs, and mods. I'm a car guy, have been my whole life, so I know the specs on the thing. also, along with that comment, I know its advertised at 330hp, but I'm hearing rumor of more. like, something closer to 350hp. True? or no?
anywho, look forward to hearing from you guys.

Your'll never know what the HP is till you put her on the dyno. Every car is a little different even off the production line. Whatever mods you install just remember to get a tune after you do them!!!
Are there any mods done to it yet?

stock your vehicle is 320hp and thats about right honestly~ expect 17-18% drivetrain loss so on a dyno it should be around 260-270rwhp.
Your engine tends to do good with intake/exhaust/ and a good tune, with that you should pick up 20-30rwhp.

Ok. Had some free time and read about parasitic loss in a drivetrain. They said you can't go by percentage because there are way to many variables when it comes to different vehicles. Not gonna read the whole thing to y'all but it did state that the best drivetrain for minimal loss is.
Electric fans
Electric waterpump
Ac off
Standard transmission.
And a 2 wheel drive system.
Light weight driveshaft
And "normal" wheels (not 24s with low profile tires is what it's getting at)
Luckily the cobras come with a few of those things.
Found the search to be quite interesting
Might do some more searching and make an article on it. |

Calculating drive-train loss is like guessing what women think about. It almost near impossible. I think that's why SpectorV stated the range of percentage he did. You really cant figure until you take your motor out and Dyno it! Your always close if you figure 20%. But again from car to car, mods, conditions etc.. it changes drastically.
Who cares what your crank power is anyway, its the power your wheels put to the pavement that mattes!! Right??!!!

The reason I say you can't really rely on percentage is. if you have a 1000 hp mustang. Your not gonna lose 200 hp in the drivetrain.

Lol you guys are awesome.....have the attention span of a 4yr old with ADD....it isn't long before you guys deviate from the core subject to something complete unrelated lol.....
anywho, drusmith....I've got long tube headers, o/r h-pipe, cai, 75mm t/b, 4:10s, SCT tuner, and a short throw shifter sitting in my room right now that'll be installed before the wks up. as far as show, have black '03 cobra's and a saleen roll bar. So....those are nxt on the agenda to install.
Next year I'd like to find a used OEM M-90 or M-112 (if it'll fit) to throw on top my 4V. Any suggestions on who, what, and where I could find a good decently used M90/M112? maybe for about or around $1k-$2.5k?

Anyways craigslist around here has several in that range.

I've also have an 01 Mustang V6 with a laundry list of mods with an automatic and I'm seeing about a 20-22% loss thru the system, about/around 16% is the industry standard for loss thru a stick trans btw to jump on board with the deviated subject ;}

would love to dyno my V6 and car separately, but that just isn't feasible for me, so I just have to make do with a chassis dyno like rest of society.

I can't stress it enough and I am sure you know this, the tune is everything! The SCT tuner you have will work good. If you have time down the road, visit a dyno shop/tuner that will do your car!
4:10s and short throw shifter will make your beast so much fun to drive!
Make sure you take tons of pictures and post them so we can all see your progress!
Sorry about getting off topic! That does tend to happen when people ask questions.
Best of luck bro!

I have a tuner to go to down in Memphis, dynospeed racing, I also consult with supersixmotorsports out of Georgia. Both dyno houses are well reputable. both have been around for some time. and both those auto and stick loss figures are the consistent figures they both run into.

the M112 is ok and if you can do it cheap thats fine, but I would buy a used twin screw blower and do that, get more power, less psi

I'd love to go a Kenne bell, but after spending all this $ on a car + toys.....yeah.....the kenne's gonna have to be put on the back burner for a while. so I think an OE 90 or 112 will do for now.

idk if its possible, but I'd like to try, about $1k-$2.5k for a good decently used OE system.

the tune alone will run a good bit just FYI, especially if you have to buy a tuner with it
and it takes more than just the blower to get it all working as well
