Lowering Springs Help??

Hey guys, I got a set of BBK Lowering Springs for my '01 Cobra earlier today and wanted to know how difficult they are to put on. How long does it normally take? Any tips? Any help is appreciated!

Thanks!!

Re: Lowering Springs Help??

Well in general our mustang's suspension is fairly straight forward. Your Cobra does have an IRS rear so that's different from the otehr stangs' SRA...

Are you sure the springs are specific to the 01 Cobra...I know the rear spring rates are much different for cobras compared to the SRA v6/v8's. Using SRA rear springs could affect performance and shock wear.

Here's an article written by a fellow member...I referred to this when installing my springs. The biggest areas of concern are decompressing the springs and cracking the strut nut, but I had air tools so that wasn't bad

Installing Mustang Lowering Springs - Mustang Evolution

I imagine there are some differences in the installation of the rear springs for the IRS...do hopefully someone with some experience will chime in.

Thanks for the input man! But I sadly forgot to add that my Cobra has a rearend swap so its a solid rearend instead of the IRS.

Re: Lowering Springs Help??

Ah cool, well then your setup is the same as all of us straight axle guys lol.

Basically the same principle in the rear as the front..actually easier as you don't have to worry about strut nuts and towers and all that crap.

I'm such a rookie. Lol. I wish I knew more. I'm just scared to tear off into it and mess something up.. But at the same time I wanna be able to work on it myself. Lol.

It's all good man, we all start somewhere. I didn't know jack sh*t when I first joined this site, but after listening to a lot of knowledgeable people and doing some research I learned more and more.

I was feeling the same way before I did my suspension. Look over that installation article a couple times, it's really helpful.

You can always start into the teardown and if you don't feel good about it or something's not right, you can always put it back together and have a shop finish it. I will say it's a lot easier if you have an extra set of hands or two to help out. Not only is the manpower nice, but another mindset will catch things you might miss.

If you really aren't comfortable with doing it, just have a shop do the install..yes it will cost more but paying a little bit more is better than damaging the car or more importantly, hurting yourself.

Well thanks for all the input man. I greatly appreciate. I may tear into it one day this week. I'll keep it posted.

Re: Lowering Springs Help??

I just lowered my stang Tuesday and the installation is time consuming but isnt that hard. I used this as a reference to do the front springs : How To Install H & R Super Sport Mustang Springs (1996-2004) - Installation Instructions at AmericanMuscle.com - Free Shipping!

and used this to do the backs : Mustangworld Progressive Rate Springs Install

The backs are SUPER EASY and recommend them first, that will also get you more familiar and comfortable. As stated before, having a helper will make the job much easier, and when doing the backs, having someone put slight pressure down on the axle makes taking the spring out very easy and fast; i just kicked it out without any strain. I highly recommend removing the abs wire in the front, and i didnt need to remove the tie rod end. Just take your time and you will have it done in no time.
