front bumper clearcoat and color matching

ok so i have a 2000 v6 mustang and the front bumper is missing half of the clearcoat, and i was wondering what the right way to painting the clear coat back on is? and also i have to fix a rust spot over the right rear wheel well and i am not sure how to get the right color to match my car, like i know the paint code but im just not sure how to get the paint to match up since the car is 10 years old and hasnt been garaged so is there like something i can add to the paint to get it to the faded color? i am going to do the painting myself since who knows how much it would be for the bodyshop to do it i was just wondering if anyone has done this job before? thanks

I don't think you can just paint an area and make it match. I do believe you have to paint the whole part at least that's what I was told when I had a deep scratch on my rear bumper.

Re: front bumper clearcoat and color matching

thats what i guessed my car needs a new paint job in the future becasue the paint was never taken car of by the first owner so i was just seeing if like there was a way to get it as close as possible for like a little while untill i can get the whole car painted.

Re: front bumper clearcoat and color matching

Unless you're very experienced or a professional in painting, I'd leave the front bumper to the shop. Smaller things like chin spoilers and calipers aren't too bad for the average guy to paint, but larger pieces like hoods and bumpers need to be done right or else they look bad...and you can tell when the lines come together.

A good body shop will sand the bumper down, repaint, clearcoat and bake. Expect to pay 200-350 for a near factory match. Keep in mind this is just an estimate, it really depends on the shops in your area.

Re: front bumper clearcoat and color matching

aw! lol yeah i sorta thought that is what i was going to have to do. well my dielma is that the first owner got the front bumper ripped off the car pulling away from a parking space lol or so i was told. (the brackets are all broke on one side so its on the car but its something that i want to replace) so i need to replace it but ive been looking on craigslist and was really trying to find a black one since i do need to get the car painted, so i was just seeing if there was just a quick fix since i dont want to dump tons of money into a bumper im going to replace. but sadley finding a black bumper or a bumper alone for a 99-04 mustang is like almost impossible! thanks for the info though

Really? I figured black would be one of the easier colors to find with people putting cobra and saleen bumpers on their GT's etc.

American Muscle sells the stock bumpers unpainted for $199. Not sure if they come with any brackets or clips.

Like you said it's not worth dumping a ton of money into it if you're going to replace it...have you thought of an upgraded bumper you like? Cobra or Roush bumper or something?

Re: front bumper clearcoat and color matching

yeah ive thought about upgradeing im not sure though i mean i like the look of some of them but some of the other aftermarket ones ive seen didnt impress me much when they were on the car like they made the car not even look like a mustang. id have to look and see what else is out there, i kinda wanted to keep it pretty real and not an imitaion of something else. but id have to see i'll probley get a gt bumper instead of a v6 becasue i think that they are a little bit lower in the front? i could be wrong but i think thats what i read somewhere and i would like to upgrade to some foglights

The GT front bumper is identical to the v6 bumper except for the fog light openings. The v6 bumper has the plastic strips across the openings, while the GT bumper has the openings.
