Making a Custom Hood

Hey guys and gals... While I am waiting on the mustang to sell i figured I would find something to do to pass some time. Well while on Craigslist today I bought a hood for 25 bucks and i'll be picking it up tomorrow. Ive been waiting for a good deal on a hood so I could tear into making my own.

I will be making a small how to on what it is I am doing step by step for those who are interested. Just like when painting something... The preparation is always the key, along with patience.

On a fast note, I am going to do some drawings of what I want the hood to look like, but here is a fast Paint drawing to show my idea.

What I am doing is taking the stock 99-04 GT hood with scoop, and basically making a cowl hood while keeping the scoop, and making the scoop functional at the same time. Here is the fast drawing. More to come later today if not tomorrow.

Update: 5/24/2011

Ok... went and picked up the hood thismorning. Great guy! Still cant believe he was happy with only charging 25 bucks for a hood. Well without further delay... Here is my canvas at which the project will start.

I am sanding and prepping at the moment so more pictures to come soon.

Re: Making a Custom Hood

Update:

Sanding her down and fixing all the rough spots... only about 8 so far that have required some extensive fun. But here you go so far.

More pictures when completely sanded. I will also be picking up the styrofoam for the first stages of sculpting tomorrow.

Re: Making a Custom Hood

When you say you're making the scoop functional, what is your intended function of the scoop?

I'll be watching this thread to get any kind of tips/pointers for when I smooth my stock hood out. I hate how pieced together and unfinished it looks underneath.

Re: Making a Custom Hood

I will basically be making a non shaker mach setup. I have 2 ways that I am debating on doing:

#1) Making it a non shaker Mach1 Setup. Fiberglassing the underbelly to guide the air downward to the intake, while still having the heat vents out the rear like a typical Cowl.

#2) Taking a flat style 10x15 inch Air Filter, and setting that up underneath the functional scoop, then fiberglassing a tray to hold the filter, and having someone custom fab me a 180 elbow bent pipe and pretty much be all of a 10 inch trip from filter to TB.

I really want to go with #2 but first things first... getting the show half done, then i'll worry about the functional.

any more questions?

Re: Making a Custom Hood

Wow, you are one ambitious mofo...I could never bring myself to doing that much for a car I was trying to sell, lol.

This is just a thought...

Couldn't you have done something similar to what you're doing with a 2.5" or +3" cowl hood...it would've already have the raised portion of the hood, you could cut out the scoop part and mold/fab the underside.

Looking at your picture got me thinking that's all, I'm sure you couldn't find a cowl hood anywhere for $25 lol.

Be interested to see how it turns out.

Re: Making a Custom Hood

Well.. worst case scenario... lol if the car sells than I will have a 1 off hood to sell and I am sure someone would be interested after all total investment right now is just shy of 45 bucks haha.

Re: Making a Custom Hood

haha, this is true.

Hell if you finish that hood before the car sells you could throw that one on the car and keep the stock hood. You could probably sell the stocker for more by itself. A lot of 03-04 v6 owners want that style hood for either GT hood scoops or Mach 1 shakers.
