Re: how often should you wax?

It really depends on a lot of things. Is your car a dd or a weekend car? If it's a dd, do you drive it seasonally or year round?

My car only gets driven on weekends to shows or on nice days into town from April-May to October.

I always wax once in the beginning of the season and then at the end before storing it, but sometimes I will wax once or twice during the summer months.

I did do a Meguiars cleaner wax and clay bar at the beginning of this season to really remove any contaminants and protect the paint.

I usually use Meguiars Quick Wax spray&mist detailer in between washes and waxes to get that "just waxed" finish. It really polishes the paint and brings out the shine..not to mention the finish is as smooth as can be afterwards.

It's also really good for removing fresh bug stains, bird ****, and other fresh contaminants in between washes and waxes.

Re: how often should you wax?

Oh yeah, the clay bars are really good. I got the Meguiars clay bar kit, but I'm sure there are other kits out there and Adams Products probably has a really good clay bar. Just make sure to use some type of lubricant. Included in the Meguiars kit is a bottle of spray detailer to use when using the clay bar.

Also, be sure to re-wax after doing the clay bar so you don't leave your paint unprotected.

Re: how often should you wax?

Rule of thumb is when the water spots get half-dollar size it's time to rewax. It really depends on the vehicle and type wax. I use a pure carnauba wax on the cobra, and if left in the elements it would break down very quickly.

Re: how often should you wax?

Before you throw that wax you can also do things like paint cleaners and a good polish. Try detailers domain or auto geek for some pro advice.

If your finish does not feel super smooth or if water is not beading supremely its definitely time to wax.

Re: how often should you wax?

yea it depends on how the car is stored and driven. If daily and not kept in a garage I would wax regularly, as said you can tell by how the car beeds water. Wax also isnt enough, you need to (now and again) wash the car with dawn detergent to remove all protection (or something to remove all wax/etc on paint) then clay bar it, rubbing compound/buff/etc as needed then reapply wax/sealant what ever you do~

Re: how often should you wax?

Like others have said, its all dependent on a number of factors:

the type of wax you're using
the type of cleaners you use when washing
how much time the car spends outside
how much the car is driven
the weather its exposed to

Best way to tell if you 'need' to wax again is when water stops beading and begins to go flat. When you wash, after soaping and rinsing, spray down an area like the hood. If the water still beads up and rolls away easily your wax is still doing its job. If the water goes flat or seems to kind of stick to the paint the wax is failing or has failed and its time to put down a fresh coat.

As we were discussing in another thread, what you use to clean the paint between waxes plays a large role in how long your wax will last. Using a pH neutral car wash soap (Adam's Car Shampoo for example) is important so as not to strip your finish.

Pay close attention to what soap you choose... many 'car soaps' sold at the autoparts store are actually very acidic or alkaline and will break wax down quickly, effectively undoing your hard work.

Re: how often should you wax?

Mine sits out and is a dd so I take extra care when I wash it because I have always hated a dirty car as soon as I see dirt of any kind I wash it and try to wax it at least once a month.

I'm right there with you Spec. My car sees more dust than sunshine from sitting in the garage. I really, really need to invest in a car cover.

If my car or vehicle I'm taking care of has Alot of build up I usually hit it with the pressure washer first. It probably sees 2 applications of collinites 845 with two coats each time a year. Then maybe some poorboys nattys red a couple times or opti seal is another one I really like. Every couple washes I will use optimum car wax also as I'm drying the car

Re: how often should you wax?

black vehicles you want to touch as little as possible though due to anything causes visible scratches/holograms etc

Usually twice a year, fall and spring. I will strip, clay bar, wash, polish, and wax. And just wash it we needed. Of course she isn't my DD.

Honestly I ended up putting more scratches in with a car cover than without. No matter how careful I was. So I gave it to my mom and step dad for their 5.0
