Question Wild paint idea

Ok here goes. Has anybody ever painted the convertible top to change the color from tan to black?

I have an old fox that looks like it went from white, to red, to black. It's cloth tho,idk if paint would stay on vinyl.

I don't plan on painting mine. It is new. But I am curious just for the Hell of it.

Instead of replacing the whole top which costs $600 I thought that maybe somebody has tried painting it instead

The 600$ is factually a good price if that includes material and labor. I got quoted 800$ for just labor, so I installed it myself.

Re: Wild paint idea

If your top has ever been "treated/cleaned" with any type of preservative, I really doubt painting or dyeing it will work. The preservatives get into the vinyl and will cause the paint/dye to not adhere well or penetrate good leading to a splotchy job at best. I would only attempt it if I had the money and was ready to replace it anyways.

$600 is just for the top AM sells them. So it might just let the top go tan instead of trying to go black.
