Tail light tinting

I have a 2002 mustang and I've been considering tinting the tail lights and I wanted opinions on what you guys think I should do. First of all, I have to buy a new right tail light anyways because the plastic broke. So should I just buy two tinted lights to replace them or should I buy one stock tail light, then take my car to a shop and have them tint my lights? Also what are the laws for lights in California? As far as I know if you can see them from 500 feet (?) away it's legal but I'm not for sure.

It will be cheaper to buy a single taillight and then tint them with film or spray whichever you choose. As at as Cali law any tint on headlights or taillights is illegal, but everyone does it anyway

I've been told once by my city's Chief Officer it was illegal. But he didn't pull me over, over that situation. Just told me while I was stopped.
