Not as easy as it looked

I've been wanting to plasti dip the currently gun metal gray pockets on my stock Premium wheels to match the Lemans stripe and rear window louvers.. I think the flat black would look good. I didn't want to cover the outer machined area. So yesterday I jacked up the car and removed the first wheel. I cleaned it off and started the taping process. I found that it was impossible for me to get it taped off to where the pockets were exposed but not the machined areas. After 2 hrs of trial and error I gave up and put the wheel back on. My back up plan is to pay $300 to get the wheels powder coated instead. I guess spraying all the wheel is relatively easy and some wheels are easier to tape off than others. These were a bear.
