to scoop or not to scoop

A big problem that I have is that I'm highly impressionable...ie: the otherday some guys at work were talking about how cool the new dodge chargers are, and I was found my self browsing for one online thinking "i gotta get one!!" but later I was like...nah...

but anyways I saw a s197 yesterday with a hood scoop and basically I have been like...."i need to get one asap!!!" but I looked at them before and with the look I'm going for, I'm going for a clean hood and a slick look rather than scoops that will make the car look bulky imo. what should I do?

Do they trap water? I ask only because I too like them, albeit only for their style and not functionality.

I installed one (a Roush scoop) on my 2005 F150 years ago. It was nice looking, but it trapped water. After it got its weekend wash and detail, I'd take off in it going somewhere, and the water underneath it would spray back towards the windshield. This made me vow never to install one again.

No, mine is a cosmetic scoop and it doesn't trap water.

i never heard of a scoop trap water, idk bout other cars, but mustang scoops usually are open so the water should just slide right down with the hood...was ur roush scoop a tape on one?

Am scoops nowadays are mostly u drill hols to bolt it down then rest of it sticks on with 3m tape, but never heard of any water trapping issues.

I think where the trapped water Bucko is asking about is all around the seam where the scoop meets the hood. There is no way to get in there to dry it out other than blowing it out. Just like other cracks and crevices you can't get to with a towel, like around and inside the front grille.

I had a 2011 and love hood scoops but I like them lower profile and wider. Most for the 05-09 are smaller. The MMD one at AM isnt bad. Now that I have a 2013 I love the heat extractor louvers. they do sell those as an option for yours.

to scoop or not to scoop

I say no, but I'm not hood scoop fan. Unless it's functional, then yes.

Nope, not a tape on scoop. It came with the template to locate the holes for drilling and using bolts from underneath the hood to install. Even had a rubber type foam that went along the edges. After the install, there was still a tiny bit of gap along the rear sides where the scoop mated to the hood. This was where the water would seep into. Then as you drove off, the water would move back, and come out through these small gaps, and splatter back against the windshield.

It looked nice though.

Scoooooooooooooop. When I bought mine it had the plane jane hood and I wanted to see something poking up while driving. So I scooped it.

Sad panda stock hood.

Fun time!

The more I think about it, I like the stock hood way more than scoops, looks cleaner and smoother and more s550ish lol. I'm more attracted to your grille and roush bumper.

scoops are for ricers... unless its functional don't bother... if you want a different hood there are better ones to choose from.. heat extractor hoods, cowl hoods..

^^ shame you can't get your point across without calling names. A lot of cars come with nonfunctional scoops, so for those who like it go for it. Those who don't then just say that you do not like scoops. No need to put people down.

I think someones insecure about how they've modded their car or they secretly want a hood scoop. I don't think anyones offended by your comments but they're certainly putoff by how much of an asshat you're making yourself out to be. The dude asked for opinions and you had to give yours four times.

I've had same dilemma deciding if I should put a scoop on or not. I would rather get a new hood but that costs significantly more $$. Because of the huge price difference, I will probably just settle and get the scoop.

I was debating a hood scoop and decided on a new hood and I am so happy that I made the decision that I did. I changed the front fascia too. Here are some before and after pics. Click image for larger version
