I've always used car soap on my rims unless I get grime or something that requires rim cleaner. I figure it's better to use less chemicals unless it's absolutely needed. Although it may not immediately affect the rims finish over time it may possible cause them to wear. I don't know this for a fact but just how I approach cleaning my car.
I've been using Adam's deep wheel cleaner on my Boss wheels. Zero problems and I really like the way it removes dirt/brake dust without harming the finish. You need some good brushes too in order to avoid damaging the finish. I use a short handle boars hair brush, Wheel whooly, boars hair lug nut brush and EZ Detail brush to clean them.
