I used plain old white bulbs. Seems to me if the bulb is red and the lens is red, it is like filtering the light twice. Maybe I'm wrong. These get good reviews.
I am using leds from www.superbrightleds.com. It is highly recommended to use the same color led as the lens color, otherwise the color tends to wash out. If you use the raxiom turn signal flasher for leds you will get a reasonable rate.
Adfalenski......I've got a 2012 base model and have thought about led taillights. I've bought a lot from SuperBrightLED's .
Did you have to add resistors or make any other changes?
These are the stock LED bulbs for a 2012 premium. Not sure if they would fit older models though. Surprised they are this cheap on eBay as they are usually around $75 each. OUCH!!!
Going too bright on the tail lights is not a good idea. The difference in brightness between the tail and brake lights will be diminished and become far less noticeable. Further, the human eye is naturally better at detecting differences in brightness at the dimmer end of the spectrum than at the brighter end. This compounds the notice-ability issue and a good way to set yourself for a rear-ender by an inattentive driver.
