so this is my first post, and I don't have a mustang... yet.
My main concern in buying one is the fact I don't want something that will rust out in areas such as the fenders, quarters, etc. in the next 5 years. I have been searching for a 2010 GT and found plenty of prime candidates, but my Fiance's 2011 escape is nearly falling apart with rust (granted she gets a wash once every 2 months and salt just sits there, but she bought it with 12k miles and it was 2 years old). Its starting to eat through the rear quarters and rear hatch already.
I realize that a Mustang will usually be a garaged summer vehicle in my area (chicago) , but this will be my DD. I do have a garage, and I do weekly washes & wax every 6 months. I get very anal about the cleanliness of my cars.
So my question is, does Ford's pony car share the same manufacturing processes as their lower end vehicles? How are the paints and metals holding up with these models? Anyone chime in with their DD experiences?
thanks! I hope to have my hands on one in the next few months!
I've not heard ONE comment here about ANY of the newer 'Stangs having rust problems. I think that the newer metals and rust proofing have so much improved over the years, that every manufacturer no longer has problems like this. I think that most offer 10 year rust through protection, so I am surprised that your girl's car has significant rust problems -- although letting the snow, slush, and salt sit on the car can't be good for the body.
Good luck in your search for the perfect Mustang --- and there are a lot of us out here who strive to never drive our cars in snow.....and rarely in the rain, and those will be in perfect condition.
^^^^that, but, there are issues with the front edge of the aluminum hood corroding. The most common theory is it is from iron contamination from the mfr process. You will see small blisters that normally start on the lower front edge. You should be able to find a nice day toy out there that has only seen water from the hose...enjoy the search
Mine is a 2012 and I live near the Atlantic ocean in Florida. Five years and no rust or hood corrosion at all.
I would say that just about any car can rust where you live driving on the salt covered roads and highways all winter.
Salt is like "CANCER" to a car. Ronnie
Well, obviously you have never tried to drive a Mustang in the snow.It is impossible without studded snow tires or chains, which Ford doesn't recommend. I have tried 4 hundred pounds of sand in the trunk and regular snow tires, NG.,This was an 05 6 cyl coupe, an 07 GT coupe and my present ride, an 11 GT/CS convertible. All were DD's, but not in the snow. You need to buy an all wheel drive clunker to drive in the winter, Save the stang for good weather.
Snow??? What is that????? I live in Daytona Beach,Florida and all the snow in Florida seems to be in Miami.
I don't think rust will be a problem if you don't use the car on snow days and you keep it washed all winter up there.
To Gpyle. Well, I live in Canada . . . you know, the Great White North, and it would kill me to have a car that I really like driving sitting in a garage 6 months out of the year. As for driving in snow, I drive my 06 slightly modified GT in the snow all the time. It did okay with all seasons the first year I had it and I drove in about three inches of snow. This year I went from the west coast to south of Calgary Alberta, over the Rockies for 9 hours in six inches of unplowed snow on the highway. Just snow churned up by trucks but not packed down. I do have snows on the car, all four corners by the way as I think putting snows just on the back is as ludicrous as climbing Everest in a bathing suit. They are not studded and I do not carry chains and all I had in the back was my suitcase and shovel . . . just in case. And we have steep hills here that weren't plowed. I went over the Coquihalla which is called the 'Highway To Hell' and actually has a T.V. show about it. The grade on that hill is 14% at the top. Snow is not a problem if you know how to drive in it and use your head and some common sense. I have a lot of fun in the snow with my car. But then, that's me. I like driving in the snow; even when there's a glazing of ice on top of packed snow and it doesn't slow me down at all. Keep the Mustang clean and wash it often in a wash that cleans the underside and I think all will turn out okay. In the posts I've seen, it's mostly the Mustangs in the 06 to 08 years that had rust problems. I do have some bubbling beneath the front of the hood and along the top of the hood, but even the stuff at the top of the hood is so small, you really have to look to see it. I had it to a body shop and they told me it's just a problem with Mustangs of a couple of years. When it gets really irritating to me, I'll replace the hood and repaint the whole car. It's 10 years old and it still looks great. I put it in car shows occasionally and it won an award for people's choice for stock mustang once so it still looks great. Even with the quarter inch square bubble at the top of the hood near the windshield.
I have a '04 GT and a '06 GT!.. Both are DD year round here in Michigan!.. I've had the '04 for 10 years now!.. Zero Rust!.. Just clean Really good once and put on a Good wax!.. After that just need to spray wash/wax a couple times a week and your good!..
As far as driving in the snow, yes good snow tires are great to have!.. But I have Toyo Proxes on mine and still don't get stuck!..
To say driving a mustang in the snow is impossible, is laughable. People have done rwd in the snow, without technology, in worse cars, well before awd/fwd was the norm, for decades. I believe you just can't be stupid behind the wheel.
this pic was taken about a month ago!.. Kids wanted to see a movie and it had already started to snow!.. No Traction Control, No ABS, and like I said, Toyo Proxies!.. ?
and this one was taken last Christmas!.. Had to get my annual Car/Tree/Snow pic!.. lol
Mine is my daily driver here in Colorado. Got about 12" 3 weeks ago, car handled it like a champ. I'm one of the ones who says I bought it to drive it so it's not going in the garage for half the year, but to each his own.

Not sure on the quality of metal but it comes down to what you expose your sled to and how you care for it. Mine doesn't see snow or rain, is garaged with a cover and professionally detailed once a year. I drive it maybe once a week and use NoRinse to wash it, actually lubricating the paint. 1 oz. of NR to two gallons of water using micro fiber mit, then dry each panel with a MF towel. Car always looks just waxed, jmo.
