Wanted! drag racing pointers and tips.....

Hey whats up! Still reeling from a couple weeks ago, I went and competed in Mustang Nationals in Bowling Green, Ky. Competed in the True Street class in the 14 second bracket and ended up coming 3rd! Think, sir, I shall take it

Though, heres the thing, with my mods and set up, I should be in the 12s. will be glad to list them off if need be. But here's the tricks I already know, though they may be few:

I have a set of M/T E/T streets....sweet spots at 12lbs.
I have the softest stock style shocks from Oreilys out back
KYB ajustables up front, adjusted to the 2nd setting outta 4(4 being firmest)
set trans at converter max, 1500 revs, with OD(4th) off
cars gutted, no trunk, back seat, or bumper supports front or rear.

Any other pointers, tricks, and tips would be welcomed and wanted.

Need clarification though, met another V6 guy there and he told me that the spare tire/wheel from a S197 GT is super light and should fit my car and could use them as drag lights for the front. Is there any validity to this? Or is this b/s???

How much and where can I find these elusive 90-10 shocks/springs that I keep hearing about?

Is there a cheaper way to find super soft springs for my backs and super stiffs for the fronts?

Guys, eager to hear what you have to share.

...what puts you in the 12's?

What 60' are you getting. That's the difference.

You must have a 125 shot of juice and a cam along with those things lol

Edit: Nevermind I saw in the other thread, blower and top end work, you must have a bad tune or something, I can break out of the 14's on motor alone once I hook... With mt et's shouldn't be a traction probably, but agree with above what is your 60'? Would you mind posting a time slip for us?

A new stall converter will help with launching greatly, I have a 3K in mine and it's great to be at max tq at launch (unless you have ****ty drag radials like me buwhahaha)

a while ago, I did a 1/4mi calculator to get a general idea of what I'd run, typed in my sh&t and thats what it said I should be running. with my mods and all, makes sense. my 60' is 2.48.

Dial:
r/t... .185
60'... 2.48
330... 6.222
1/8... 9.32
mph... 78.67
1000... 12.01
e.t. ... 14.28
mph... 100.23

hope that helps.

how bigga stall should I go? bear in mind this is going to streeted, I do have a 2nd car, so I can press my luck with this a bit.

What about those S197 spare tire wheels for the fronts? will they fit my car? are they really lighter like I was told? what about springs? what can I do with them?

look forward to hear more.

When you going to add a power adder I remember when you had the engine first built and have all the head problems you been laying low since then

Wow, yes you need more go from the line, 2.48 without spinning is lugging pretty bad, I was spinning out the lot with a 2.15 lol

Somewhere in the 3-3.5K range would help greatly, I have a 3K in mine and I drive her everywhere, DD ftw! Also look into some 3.73's, I guess this would be the time to bring it up, do you have an 8.8 rear end? You'll probably come close to breaking the 7.5 with that much power and soon to be hard launching

As to the spares they have the same bolt pattern just the clearances are a little different, best I myself can say is see if someone you may know with a S197 will let you try it on your car, and while you have it weigh it compared to your spare tire, keep in mind those are not high speed rated tires, so there is always some risk but in common use they are often used as drag skinnies

Springs, you want a medium rate spring in the rear and a soft spring in the front, some guys use the 4banger fox springs as they are a little softer (they are a little lower iirc also)

Another good mod for drag racing is a beefy set of lower control arms, that'll help reduce any wheel hop and firm up the launch, and to add to this sub frame connectors to stiffen the chassis reducing flex also gives you a better launch

Well I'm still trying to get a better set of heads (this second set has a cracking weld), and I have a nice cam coming from Kyle afterwards I will be saving up for a while and then doing something, my friend has a crazy idea we might be trying so we'll see

kickerofdoom-
3:73s, Ford Racing alum. driveshaft, OE control arms.

Dav-
Alright, I'll work on a bigger stall over the winter and spring and hopefully have that squared away by end of spring. Already have 3:73s, i'm sold on jumping to 4:10s. No 8-8, pretty content with my 7 1/2. I've given it hell for 7yrs and hasn't given me a lick of fits. Thats whats up, I'll pick up a pair this winter. And I'll pick up some Fox 2-3 springs over the winter as well. And subframe conn. too.

Herb-
Thank you, I'll blow those links up and study them.

Well that's what I mean you've been easy on it so far running 2.48 60's lol once you start getting below 2.00 on those sticky MT's the chance increases greatly, which diff are you running? If its the auburn unit I wouldn't be worried as much but the ford one is very hit and miss

Wait wait, you have an open factory differential and 3.73 gears? How do you even get traction lol

You need some form of posi/LSD if you don't have one, when you jack up the back of car and turn one wheel, does it lock and barely turn or does it turn while the other side goes in the opposite direction?

275/18 Nitto 555 street tires. I used the Reloc brackets but I was getting 1.89 before them.

I just launch high and slip.

1.873 60' foot in March (cold) netted me a 12.871 @ 108.08 MPH with full exhaust/intake/tune/4.10

in 100 degrees and 4500+ DA I ran 12.747 @ 109.98 with a 1.85 60' after I installed Cams/Plates/Pulley/Driveshaft.

Later that night as it got more humid, I ran 12.737 with a 1.81 60' foot with a slower trap of 109.09.

My goal, which should be easily attainable, is 12.399XX or faster @ 110.50+ or faster in this nice cool weather we have been having.

Very nice, good luck man!
What type of clutch are you running to handle all that stress?

If I can not nail a 12.3XX in the winter, I will try to get tuned elsewhere.
