Road Course Helmets

So I'm looking to start running my car at a local track and I was wondering what some decent yet affordable helmets brands were. I'm only planning on doing lapping days until I feel comfortable enough with my driving to start doing any sort of competition events.

I've heard of them before, I haven't really researched anything yet. I was thinking maybe a Shoei if I could find a good deal on one

If its not DOT it's junk..

Shelf life on DOT is 5 years, shelf life on Snell 10 years. $ for $ a cheaper Snell approved is better then a nicer DOT.. Look into Snell testing V. DOT..
Personally I won't wear ANYTHING not Snell..
You can find build dates and approval type/year inside under the padding.

Also ANY alterations to the helmet including paint and stickers can compromise the structure and allow you to be injured. Even a short drop to a hard surface can compromise the helmets structure.

Unless its a high end lid w/ proof of purchase its generally best to steer clear of used lids..

Do some research on DOT/Snell testing and spend time trying helmets on.. Comfort, weight and adjustability are mainly what changes as the price goes up..

General rule.. Spend on you lid what you believe the contents to be worth.

I will definitely do that. I've got a couple buddies with helmets so I'll see if I can't try theirs on at some point.

Anywhere that sells helmets should be happy to help fit you, and professional help in the fitting process is really helpful too. good luck with your search! Be sure to post up some pics of whatever lid you go with!

I'd suggest an "SA" rated helmet. SA2010 is the most recnet SA rating.

Contact John Ruther at Northstar Motorsports (www.NorthstarMotorsports.com) for help and a wide variety of helmets.

+1 on getting the most recent SA rating. That will be good with any sanctioning body & maximize the life of your helmet. I personally wouldn't buy a used one.

Check Racer Wholesale Parts & Pegasus Racing, they have good pricing. I just picked up a new G-Force at RWP to replace my dated-out Bell. It even came with a really nice helmet bag.

You also need to look in to what ever racing you do they might have different requirements stay away from motorcycle helmets most auto racing organizations don't allow them

I'll mostly be doing lapping days until I feel comfortable with my driving abilities. Their only rules are that I have to have a helmet. I've been looking at auto cross helmets mostly.

I've yet to hear of a sanctioning body that does not recognize Snell or DOT.. I would certainly welcome a link to ones website. Not saying there aren't any by any means but I'm interested as to which..

Finally have an update, I ran into issues with bills back in december so I wasn't able to order a helmet up until last Thursday. I went with the Bell Sport helmet in gloss black, still waiting on a shipping confirmation. Once I get comfortable with my driving I've got my eyes on a really nice carbon fiber helmet. I'll post pics once I get my helmet

Would buying a helmet bag be a good idea?
