Will 20 inch rims get ya thru the 1/4

With many of us running 3:73 manuals in our GT's
and running out of gear in 4th just before the 1/4 mile is up (The Boss just pumps out more RPMS to get it done)

Would going to 20 inch rims
(change the gear ratio to aprox 3:65 ?)

just enough to make it thru ~~~~~~~~~~

As for your question...

Changing the rim size won't make a difference if you run the same type of tire. When i say that i mean overall height. You will want to upgrade that.

An example is going from a 305/35-18 tire, do the calculations and that is a total of 26.4" tall. Now if you were to go to a 305/40-18 tire (keep in mind, this is the same exact rim size) you will then be at a 27.6" tall tire.

Say you went from something like a 245/45-17 to a 275/35-18, you will be going from a 25.7" tall tire to a 25.6" tall tire. You increase the size of the actual rim, but are still losing overall diameter.

Exactly

Ive seen 20 inch rims that fill the entire wheel well up

Hard to believe it has NO effect on the overall gear ratio

the 20" rim doesn't fill up the wheel well, the tire dose, It all depends on the size and ratio of tire you buy IE 50,55,45,60, All mustangs come with 26 to 27" tires regardless of rim size ( 16. 17.18, 19 or 20 )

Your suggesting the tires SHRINK as the rims get Bigger ?

Someone with a 17 inch rim
then puts a 20 inch rim gains NO height
Because the tires compensate the height ?

I dont know man
Ive seen those gang bang Chevy impalas floating around here in Miami with 22, 24 and 26 inch rims and there aint NO WAY their not effecting the gear ratio

Especially those that are literally jacked up in the air like 5 feet just to clear the wheels

This is very confusing

It's not JUST the rim, it's the overall diameter of the rolling part. Sure a 20" rim is bigger in diameter than a 16" rim, but what if the 16" rim had a tire with 8" sidewalls and the 20" rim is using a tire with 1" sidewalls? your smaller rim has a total wheel+tire diameter of 32" (pretty standard light truck all terrain tire) and your 20" rim with the low profile tire is only 22" in total diameter.

If you go to Tirerack.com you can compare the "revolutions per mile" of different size tires by pressing the "specs" bar.
