First time at the Track!

Last night was my first time at the track. I had such a great time and it was a good experience. I drive a 2003 Mustang GT convertible. Could only go down twice. The best time I got was a 13.85. Had some low tread on my tires and plan on getting new ones before my next trip. My mods are CAI, 70mm throttle body/plenum, MM Coil overs on Koni struts, TubularKMember, longtubes, O/R X pipe, Borla stingers, Koni rear shocks, 3.73 gears, tune and lowering springs for the rear.

Good times, just beware, if you run 13.50 or quicker in a ragtop, you will need a roll bar. Much more improvement and they will shut you down.

I had my '95 T/A ragtop down to the track a few years ago and ran a best 13.66. I can't do much more with that car either or I would have to put in a roll bar, which would just break up the clean look of a ragtop in my opinion. I know others do it, just not for me. I don't even like those light bars. Unless, of course, it is a 60s Shelby GT500KR.

I've been leaning towards putting in a 4 point sports bar just for roll over protection, I don't really want to put a full cage in my daily driver

Been driving convertibles since 1991, haven't even come close to rolling one yet, not that it can't happen. I also think extra strength is built into the front windshield frame on ragtops. Upside is, if we ever need to get cut out of a car, I'm thinking it would go much quicker!

Good to know, I have been debating on mild mods vs going big with a KB SC for my 2003 GT vert. I pretty much settled on being happy with mild mods and low 14's/high 13's. The thought of spending extra on sc and not being able to take it to the track further confirms that decision for me.

Good time! Is your car a 5-speed (I assume) or an auto? They let you go down the track with the top down?

No the top was up lol and it's an automatic but I did the J mod to it and makes it shift soooo much better!! I just got my new saleen rims and tires in today!! 315's in the rear now and a set of lower control arms. Going to see how she runs this Friday. Eventually in considering putting in a 3000 stall converter but that's all in time

Good to know, I will likely do j-mod myself. Improved shifting that helps transmission longevity. Not sure I trust myself to do it myself though! Awesome run!

Hey man if a 21 year old (myself) can rebuild his own engine and do the Jmod (my first time) I have confidence that you can handle it

Good for you man doing all that work yourself! When I was your age I was doing my own (minor) work to my Tbird SC without even thinking about it. I remember I ripped off stock SC pulley and installed underdrives night before I had to drive two hours back to school for test the following morning. Nothing like working under pressure and hoping all goes well. Tougher to get going now for sure with family/job/other cars, etc.

I am gathering info from this site and others to proceed with Jmod. Gotta gather some better tools and I will be good to go.
