S650 - April/May 2020

Source: News: Seventh-Generation S650 Mustang

A new report says the next-gen S650 Mustang will debut in May of 2020

According to a new report from the accounting firm UHY LLP, the seventh-generation Mustang will debut in May of 2020 after the S550 ceases production in April of that year. That North American Automotive Production Forecast also says that the start of production for the next-gen Mustang was bumped up by a couple of years and its codename was changed.

“Program code for the next‐generation Mustang (S550(ng)) has been changed to S650 and the SOP has been shifted back from January 2022 to May 2020,” says the UHY LLP report. “Subsequently, the EOP for the S550 has been moved to April 2020.”

We’d have to assume that S550NG was a working title, as S650 definitely has a better ring to it. Moreover, Ford’s engineers must be putting in a lot of overtime to produce such an important vehicle in a shorter timespan.

Now, this information just comes from one accounting firm report, so we won’t lock it in as fact just yet. However, UHY LLP appears to be a reputable player in that world.

“UHY Advisors is one of the top 20 professional services firms in the US, and UHY International is one of the largest accounting networks in the world,” says the company’s website. “While that scale may provide confidence for some of our clients, most tell us our greatest value is in the way we bring these resources to bear to help address today’s evolving business challenges.”

You can peep the full report here if you want to learn more about what might be coming from the automotive manufacturers.

Here’s a screen cap of the UHY LLP report, which outs the next-gen Mustang’s S650 codename and production month. There are some interesting tidbits about other Ford vehicles here as well.

And this will likely be your twin Eco6 powered Mustang GT. They need to, or they need to develop something that can compete in the horsepower wars again.

RIP, 5.0.............but a 520 HP dual turbo V6, 3,100 pound, IRS Mustang would be KILLER!!!
Put some 3.73's behind this engine with a really deep OD 5th and 6th, and this might be a 3.2 second 0 to 60 mph, 190 mph top speed car..........

Highly doubt this will happen but it would be cool if they had Porsche style GT classes.
GT6 - detuned Ford GT engine 500ish hp
GT8 - Voodoo rev raised to 8500rpm
We get a lightweight beast and keep a V8 beast with a high rev limiter.
So basically twin turbo V6 and a flat-plane crank V8 GT options.
Everyone's happy.

Adventure till you drop.

GM forcing Fords hand with a new platform for the Mustang.

One question about this .... does that mean that any upcoming special editions (Mach 1, Cobra, Boss, SVO) will not happen?

Ford will have to stick with a V8, just like GM and Chrysler for their "muscle/pony" cars. Otherwise, the V8 only 'Murica people will never buy one and they need those people. I could see something similar to what happened with F150. A V8 or TT V6 both with similar power numbers.

Ford really needs to punch out Coyote to 5.4 - 5.6 L, add DI and maybe some sort of cylinder shut off to keep the MPG up. There is no reason that the smaller Coyote engine should get several MPG less than GM's larger 6.2L.

Also ... WTF with the Taurus? Why extend it out for so long unless they are going to run it into the ground like they did with the Panther platform.

They should have done DI from day 1. And they probably will have a V8 option but have a "base" GT with a TT6 making just as much or even more power than the V8.

Definitely need to punch the Coyote out tho. Hell, throw a high compression NA version of the Trinity motor at it with DI and a few new bells and whistles and there you go.

Agreed on GM forcing Ford's hand in the performance dept. And hell for straight line even Chrysler has Ford beat currently.

I wouldn't mind a factory TT V6, but that's hoping Ford makes better engines. Hopefully the healthy competition GM is providing with be our benefit.

I honestly would't mind seeing an AWD option. I am considering a 6spd 16/17 GT this fall or next spring as a daily driver and would love the AWD for the winter months.

Still keep the normal RWD in production, but option out AWD.

Zipping up the flame suit in 3, 2, 1...

+1 for AWD as an option

I'd buy one in a heartbeat.

If you want AWD, get the Focus RS. Mustang is and always should be RWD.

Would be cool to see a boosted war. Supercharged Camaro vs. Ecoboost Mustang

No chance they completely ditch the V8 .. and probably no chance on the AWD... and if so every goober out there wold put a "hoonicorn" sticker on it I'm sure , to match there monster energy stickers... flat plane crank would be killer by mpg would die... guess I'm with everyone else here.. bore it and stroke it .. hell even better would be an ecoboost v8 but that just dreaming right there

Posted as a reply in another thread, but applicable here as well:

If Ford IS going to keep the V8 after 2020, they are going to have to invest in Direct Injection and cylinder deactivation. Doing both for the 5.0 is going to cost them big $$'s and with the mpg standards ramping up so rapidly, are they going to be willing to make this investment?
I would not be surprised to see Ford go to a 3.8 to 4.2 liter V8 with dual turbos if they want to still have V8 bragging rights.
The 3.5 EB makes a GREAT towing engine in the F-150, and a smaller V8 with dual turbos could be amortized even better if made for the Mustang AND the F-150.
