Fixing Cats?

Is it possible to fix Catalytic Converters? Mine just stopped working and I don't want to pay the $2,500 for all new exhaust and labor (ford doesn't sell cats individually, just stock H pipe with cats/mufflers)

No they aren't repairable. Just buy an aftermarket catted mid-pipe and take it to an exhaust shop. Should be out for way less than $1000 unless S197s parts are more expensive than I think.

I live in CA, any form of non OEM mid pipes will fail.

Go to a muffler shop and get an estimate to have them weld in some new cats.

I highly doubt that the emissions tech will know the difference between an aftermarket catted mid pipe and the original...

You could always go to a junkyard or see if anyone is selling their stock cats and get a shop to swap them

The cats on the S197 are weird and they're special order, and they don't come individual, they come with the H-pipe and it's $1,700 without labor.

It is illegal in CA for wrecking yards, or anybody for that matter, to sell used catalytic converters.
With that being said, Craigslist is the place to purchase such items...

Craiglist would be used though, so wouldn't that be considered illegal?

I've tried and they said the cats are special order from Ford and I can only get cats if I buy a new H-Pipe.

Yes it is.
But 99% of the population doesn't know that it is illegal...

The CA county that I live in (Lake) doesn't have the silly "every two years" emissions testing requirements.

Naw. A little less than half of the population is normal just like the rest of us.

Get on a bunch of Mustang forums and CL and find yourself a stock H pipe in good shape and buy it. Swapping it is an easy thing to do in the driveway if you have tools, I would never even consider paying for something so easy but I know not everyone has tools or is in 100% good health either. Any competent mechanic with a lift should be able to swap your bad pipe with the new pipe in an hour.
