DIY Raxiom GPS Hacks/Improvements

Hey all, my major upcoming project is going to be getting custom software/splash screens going on the Raxiom unit, and getting dual cameras (front and backup) working with the unit. Requirements are below, and I'll be updating this thread with links and progress for those of you that want to undertake something similar. Please note that DIY-level computer/electrical engineering skills are required, but I'll try to make a step-by-step at some point. For now, I'm just waiting for parts to come in, but I figured I'd share my research thus far.

Requirements:
1) Backup and Front cameras both working (ideally with backup camera overridng the front one upon switch to reverse)
2) Custom splash screen for Raxiom unit
3) Alternate maps/software loaded

Camera Progress:
1) Ordered an additional Rosen backup camera for the front of the car (part # DP-1068)
2) Ordered the ICs in this blog post to switch the 4-pin mini-dins on the cameras
How-To: Make a solid-state A/V switcher
3) Really need to decide where to put a rocker switch to switch between the front and back cameras. It's going to require a cutout in the GPS/dash/console bezel to look nice and be efficient/easy to use.

Logo Progress
1) Looks super easy, but instructions are for a different Rosen unit. However, there should be software overlap.

1) I've looked into this so far, it seems that the Rosen units run Windows CE, so there should be some significant hacking opportunities. Will report more when I've had a chance to mess with the unit. Admittedly, this will be the last thing I work on (cameras are a priority).

Sounds like you're doing a lot of customizing to your Nav! That's really cool. How are you enjoying everything so far?

The Digikey parts are supposed to come today, with the GPS unit arriving tomorrow. We'll see. I'm planning on doing an AM-style guide for the dual backup cameras (as well as a guide for the install, since it looks like no one has done that yet!), so hopefully it will be easy to do. It's really all theory at this point, but we'll see once the solder hits the pins It'll be nice to be in my element (software / electrical), instead of something new for once (mechanical/bodywork)

I haven't seen anyone run dual cameras so that should be very cool. I look forward to checking out the progress. Should be cool!

Definitely submit your installation guide on the actual unit when it's completed!

My nav unit is sitting in the box still waiting for my car to arrive from Germany, so I guess I could check but I thought I read where there was an second video input on the unit?

I got the file system access working (via explorer.exe and a launcher). I can run other WinCE apps as well . I still haven't been able to change the boot logo, but I do have a soldered board that I'll test with a multmeter Saturday to scope out the pins. Once I know those (they claim its proprietary), I should be able to continue testing the board.

Looks like the boot logo is 99% not replaceable. Most of the Windows system files are stored in ROM and the boot logo is supposedly in flash (though I can access NAND Flash from Windows). Currently trying to develop a nice launcher screen using "iPhoneToday" (which autoloads from SD). All I need to do is get the default application (AppDriver.exe/StartUP.exe -- the music / phone app) working via the launcher and I'll release what I have here.

So a summary for this project for now since people have been asking:

So first the bad news. The system does a hard reset when it reloads (you power off the car, etc.). It uncompresses the full CE filesystem from ROM. The version of Windows CE appears to be CE6 and is the Chinese language version. All Rom Dumpers, etc. that I've attempted to use have not been able to get the exes from the ROM. If I could get the EXE that actually runs the main app (sync/music/camera,etc.), then I could just add that to my iPhone esque launcher (which is the best solution I've found; iPhone Today), but it doesn't let you go back to the launcher after you use the default UI app. You can edit the layout and icons, etc. by editing the XML layout files; simple stuff. You can use MioPocket to effectively hack your device and get windowing working for everything (you can minimize the default SW app). Of course, that "hack" you did reverts when you turn off the car, so unless you can roll it into something permanent (you can access the NAND from the file explorer and save files there), it's pretty worthless, although cool. So what does that leave you with? Well you can change the Navigation application to any windows CE program you want (maybe get a garmin one and copy over all the maps, etc.) since all of that is stored on the SD card, but outside of soldering the board or doing something outside of Windows CE (which I've never tried since it would be very risky), you're pretty much stuck with the Raxiom boot logo and the default navigation app. I'll start a new thread that's DIY for the two backup cameras when I get that working. It has taken a back seat to painting my interior and doing some sound dampening (plus a known solution already exists; RCA cable switchers!).

I am lockated in Western Europe and need a proper map.

I would love to see Apple Car Play and Android Auto integrated into the system. It would be great to use Google maps for navigation.
