MotorTrend tests the 2015 ...

GT - 2015 Ford Mustang GT First Test - Motor Trend All Pages

BASE PRICE $32,925
PRICE AS TESTED $46,380
VEHICLE LAYOUT Front-engine, RWD, 4-pass, 2-door coupe
ENGINE 5.0L/435-hp/400-lb-ft DOHC 32-valve V-8
TRANSMISSION 6-speed manual
CURB WEIGHT (F/R DIST) 3814 lb (54/46%)
WHEELBASE 107.1 in
LENGTH x WIDTH x HEIGHT 188.3 x 75.4 x 54.9 in
0-60 MPH 4.4 sec
QUARTER MILE 12.8 sec @ 112.2 mph
BRAKING, 60-0 MPH 107 ft
LATERAL ACCELERATION 0.96 g (avg)
MT FIGURE EIGHT 24.7 sec @ 0.84 g (avg)
EPA CITY/HWY/COMB FUEL ECON 15/25/19 mpg
ENERGY CONS., CITY/HWY 225/135 kW-hrs/100 miles
CO2 EMISSIONS, COMB 1.06 lb/mile

For comparison, the last GT and SS test results from MotorTrend -

2013 Chevrolet Camaro SS 2013 Ford Mustang GT

TEST DATA
ACCELERATION TO MPH
0-30 1.8 sec 1.7 sec
0-40 2.4 2.6
0-50 3.2 3.3
0-60 4.3 4.4
0-70 5.4 5.5
0-80 6.8 6.8
0-90 8.3 8.4
0-100 10.2 10.2

QUARTER MILE 12.7 sec @ 111.8 mph 12.7 sec @ 111.9 mph
BRAKING, 60-0 MPH 101 ft 110 ft
LATERAL ACCELERATION 1.03 g (avg) 0.96 g (avg)
MT FIGURE EIGHT 24.2 sec @ 0.83 g (avg) 25.0 sec @ 0.77 g (avg)

BASE PRICE $33,535 $31,095
PRICE AS TESTED $43,105 $39,185

So, it's slower than the 426hp Camaro in 0 - 60, matches the current GT. Has a .1 slower ET through the 1320 at .3 MPH faster than the current GT.

The new GT stops 3 feet shorter from 60 than the 2014, yet is still 6 feet short of the Camaro.

It's slightly better at handling than the 2014. Matching the 2014 with a .96g (avg) and beating it in the figure 8 by .3 seconds. Still lost badly to the Camaro which posted 1.03g (avg) and 24.2 second figure 8. So it lost by half a second.

Ecoboost - 2015 Ford Mustang EcoBoost 2.3 First Test All Pages

BASE PRICE $25,995
PRICE AS TESTED $37,660
VEHICLE LAYOUT Front-engine, RWD, 4-pass, 2-door coupe
ENGINE 2.3L/310-hp/320-lb-ft turbo DOHC 16-valve I-4
TRANSMISSION 6-speed automatic
CURB WEIGHT (F/R DIST) 3658 lb (53/47%)
WHEELBASE 107.1 in
LENGTH x WIDTH x HEIGHT 188.3 x 75.4 x 54.4 in
0-60 MPH 5.6 sec
QUARTER MILE 14.1 sec @ 97.8 mph
BRAKING, 60-0 MPH 106 ft
LATERAL ACCELERATION 0.96 g (avg)
MT FIGURE EIGHT 25.5 sec @ 0.80 g (avg)
EPA CITY/HWY/COMB FUEL ECON 21/32/25 mpg
ENERGY CONS., CITY/HWY 160/105 kW-hrs/100 miles
CO2 EMISSIONS, COMB 0.78 lb/mile

For comparison against the 2014 V6 with PP.

2014 V6 PP

60 - 5.3 seconds
1/4 mile - 13.9 sec @ 100.1 mph
60 - 0 - 110 ft
Lateral Acceleration - 0.95 g (avg)
Figure 8 - 25.4 sec @ 0.70 g (avg)

So ... the new EB 2015 is slower in acceleration, stops slightly better, handles roughly the same....

FAIL.

Ford is gona be similar to how the camaro was in 2010 with it's new IRS. The camaro suuuuuuuuucked in 2010 because it was a brand new suspension in their camaro. The mustang will be much better in 2017 when it gets a little re-face and some tweaks to the suspension and possibly engine

Competition is good for these type of cars. Sounds like it's on!

I was expecting a bit better performance compared to the current model. Sounds like it's about the same and the engine tweaks just made up for the slight weight gain. The odd comparison though, is the lateral G's. I was expecting a much better number from the new stang. That's pretty disappointing IMO. I was truly expecting better in that area. Can't wait to see what mods do for the new stang and some real life comparisons, etc. The magazines often seem biased when it comes to these comparisons.

I am torn. I am happy the 4 is a lame duck. Idling in the city, sure, the 4 is better on MPG. Otherwise, it just matches the v6. It is barely better at all, and not worth the price jump. BUT with the 4 being so lame, they are sand bagging the 6. I am torn.

But I am guessing it will be the entry engine on my 2017/18 Lincoln MKM, so I guess I'll be stuck with it.

Yuck. Car got a beer gut full of weight. 3800lbs is ridiculous and 3600 in a 4 banger is laughable.

I was thinking about giving this a chance and maybe going after a GT, but I think I'll skip this generation until they get some of that sorted...

Weight increase is disappointing. I thought the Mustang was supposed to be lighter....new MX 5 is reportedly 220 lbs lighter than previous generation. Maybe Ford should take notes. ..

I agree. I couldn't believe it when I saw that it was heavier than the previous model. I see people saying it's because of the IRS, but that's stupid because it was a complete redesign. The IRS weight should have been built into a total weightloss.

I just can't get over the fact that Ford initially claimed the 2015 was going to be up to a few hundred pounds lighter and a much smaller car.

Then it turns out to weigh up to a few hundred pounds more than the current model, actually being within a spare tire and decent poop of weighing more than the current fat *** Camaro.

http://blog.americanmuscle.com/break...t-improve-mpg/

It's not like Ford didn't have a target to beat, the 2014 GT, Boss 302 and the 5th gen Camaro should have been it's target and it should rightfully outperform them. In reality, there isn't even enough performance difference for a mid-cycle refresh, let alone an all new platform.

If the 2015 GT is any indication of what the special edition Mustangs will be, the current Camaro and it's special editions (1LE, Z28) won't have anything to worry about on the track. Then when the sixth gen Camaro makes it's debut, it will likely start beating on Fords like it did all throughout the 90's, that being massively out performing them.

The 2015 is looking like a massive disappointment all around.

MotorTrend tests the 2015 ...

It almost sounds like they meant to have the mediocre performance to try and bolster sales of they're possible specials. Though, I'm not really sure what specials they have planned for 2015. It does seem like a bit of a failure in the performance area.

Kinda brings back memories of 96-02 era. We were out powered from the get go. Now, the Camaro already has a nice suspension and it certainly looks better than the old F bodies. Ford is screwing up IMO letting their performance fall off the mark.

The 2015 is looking like a massive disappointment all around.

They did cut weight off the car quite a bit. But with the IRS it was known that a lot of that weight would have come back. And then more mandatory structural support added weight.

Also the '15 is already said to be beating the Boss 302 around the track, so I'm sure ones like the GT350 model should be a fair match up against models like the 1LE.

Although they really do need a bit more tech in it. The magnetic ride control GM uses is pretty nice. Ford needs to incorporate something like that.

Don't get me wrong. I'm disappointed also with the '15, looks like I'll be sticking with my 01 lmao.

I've said it. If I was getting a car right now, instead of buying a bit over a year ago, I would not be in a Mustang. Heck, I'd probably wait another year for the new Camaro, or just save up for the Stingray.

Some stingrays just got recalled. I would love a C7 though. They really hit a soft spot for me after I saw them in person.

I'm assuming you meant my stepfather?

He loves it, but he had major back surgery shortly after buying it so it's been sitting in his garage .

The day I drove it sold me on them. I just need the money lol.

Is there anyone in this thread willing not to count their ducks before they hatch? You all talk about the car like you've driven it.

Here are a couple very positive reviews of the 2015:

Positive reviews yes. And I personally think it will perform great. What I'm disappointed in is the comparison performance. I was expecting it to perform better than its competition by a greater amount.

As far as performance they are outstanding. My dad likes the C5 best because it's a bit longer and more sleek likes instead of sporty lines

The things I have taken away from all the reviews is that the new car rides better, has a nicer interior and is more refined.

From a performance standpoint, the car handles slightly better and that is it. The sad thing about the handling is that while it is better than the 2014 Mustang, it's worse than the current 5 year old Camaro.

You can't expect a great car when someone writes,

"What was a revelation on the street disappoints on the track. The Mustang GT is soft and wallows. OK, good front-to-rear balance, I can convince the tail to wag and impressed how well the brakes held up, that’s been a Mustang weakness in the past, but in this group, I feel like I’m driving mom’s Taurus."

That was from almost halfway through the article - First Drives: 2015 Ford Mustang - Road & Track

Yes better and by a large amount. I wasn't clear lol. We'll see though when it's actually out if it indeed is beaten in performance by the Camaro.

Motor trend has always showed preference to Chevy and Camaros. The only positive mustang reviews I remember were for the S197 in 2005, but there were no Camaros to compare it to.
They've had these neck and neck performance stats and they always give it to the Camaro because it a better glove box or a better radio knob. Motor Trend is always biased, I guess GM spends more $ advertising.

Chevy runs deep, don't step in Chevy.

The 5th gen Camaro SS has lost several matchups against the 2011 GT. From the late 80's up through 2002, the Mustang was never even close to the performance of the F-bodies.

You also can't argue with track times. In a straight line, the current Camaro and Mustang are basically dead even. Once you throw in a few corners, the Camaro absolutely walks away from the Mustang. It's not just Motortrend that does this, in every magazine and every review I have ever read, the Camaro just has a better chassis. Even the Camaro 1LE with 426 hp walks away from the 13/14 GT500 and Boss Mustangs, simply because it destroys them in braking and turning.

Even with all the GM recalls Camaro will probably sell more 2015 units over 2015 mustang units. I belong the a local mustang club and out of 200 plus members there isn't even one who is planning on getting the 2015 at least now. I mean, where are all the I can't live without this car enthusiasts. Heck, there is hardly on the mustang forums who are ordering them. A small amount compared to the actual membership.

So where are all the enthusiast's who are buying these new 2015's. Are you getting that Saleen? I have been to numerous car shows this summer and yet to find people who said they are going to buy that 2015 model. I can smell a flop and a newer generation stang will be reborn. Lol

The performance stats are disappointing, looks are so-so. I think it's something I could only like in person.

I won't be buying one until they get some of the performance and weight gain sorted out.
