OP...You're losing sight of the fact that they gave $19K off the MSRP for Paulcqt.
If you get $20K off your $38,000 MSRP that would be $18,000 you would owe.
If you got $18,000 for your trade, off the $35,000 price, you would owe $17,000. Don't expect to get top trade-in value on a price tag that's already been reduced about $3,000.
I'd say $35,000 for that car is not bad. That's a little below invoice.
Find out what you can expect to get for your car from a private party. Then find out what the dealer will give you, keeping in mind a trade-in will reduce your sales tax by about $1,000 for a $16,000 trade-in. In other words you would have to get at least $1000 more from a private sale to make up what you would be saving in sales tax.
