GT 350R Steering Wheel Installed

Just thought I would post the after install picture, and spread the word on how easy the install was. Took me about 30 minutes to complete, and I really love the feel.

What you need:

3 mm Allen wrench to release the airbag

10 mm socket and ratchet to disconnect the battery

24 mm socket for the steering wheel bolt

T20 torx bit

The wheel is off in 5 mins, and that includes disconnecting the battery. Swapping the switches is what took the majority of time. Picked up my wheel from the link below for $345 plus shipping.

I have the GT350 (non R) steering wheel in a box under my desk. Just waiting for my car to come in so I have something to install it on!!

I thought the red line & stitching wouldn't match unless I had the Cali Package red accents, or leather recaros with red stitching accents.

I had put the GT500 steering wheel on my 2014 GT Prem. Conv. and the alcantara grip feels so much better than even the premium leather SW.

I was torn between the R and non- R, but I really like the Red; it's not out of place at all.

Nice write up, I sat in the garage with my iPad watching the CJ Pony video.

I have the R wheel as well, and the Redline Recaro's to match it really completes the look.

IF you get the GT350R steering wheel, then you need to get the shifter boot with red stitching: Mustang Premium Black Leather Shift Boot - Red Stitching (15-17 All) - Free Shipping

GT350 shifter & retap it
GT350 all red start button.

Yes, you just have to swap the plastic back play over.

P.S. If you order the GT350 shifter, its got a different (smaller) size bolt/thread. So you'll have to drill it out larger & retap it to fit GT/V6/Ecoboost mustangs.

OR if you order from CJ Pony Parts, they charge $20 more, but its already drilled & retapped.

Highly recommend it for any S550 owner. You wouldn't believe how the nicer materials on the wheel elevate your whole perception of the car.

Awesome directions Sam... Ford Performance directions didn't say all the tools needed. It was the 24mm socket that had me running to the auto parts store mid install.

Also bought the GT350 shift knob from CJ, but didn't like the awkward height it sat at. Sits much better combined with a short throw shifter like Boomba, FP or Steeda and the shorter height shaft.

Interesting. I'm wondering if the stock GT350 shifter is a shorter shifter thus its a good height for those cars ? I'm going to have to go look at one of the GT350's in the showrooms around here and see its height.

I already have the GT350 steering wheel and shifter at my desk... just waiting for my car to come in.

I got the same feedback from people (about it changing the whole feel/perception about the car when you sit in it and put your hands on the wheel) about the GT500 steering wheel in my '14 GT.

Thanks for the kind words T-Bone. Yeah, I had to make a tool run too for that 24mm socket; that's the only issue I had with the install. Also, I forgot to list a pick on the required tool listing. Another tool like a scribe would work, but the pick that I have made easy work of disconnecting the airbag wiring.

GT 350R Steering Wheel Installed

Then only issue I had was the internal components. The two silver screws in the upper left and right corners holding the upper mode button frames in place. With VERY minimal pressure they both stripped out. There seems to be plastic internally that the screws go into. When I removed them to see what the issue was, there was plastic wrapped around the threads.

I talked to Ford Racing and they said they would have an engineer contact me. The issue is a good rattle could dislodge them and, well, they are directly behind the airbag. You can guess what that could potentially cause. I asked if I could use an epoxy to keep them in, however if I ever have to remove the steering wheel again those screws will most likely never come out.

Just a precautionary note if y'all have the same issue. Waiting for Ford to get back to me.
