2017 mustang

I am ordering a 2017 gt with a Manual transmission. Keeps millennial from being able to steal it. I am not sure what gearing would be best. I don't plan to drag race but do want to track every so often. Would a 3.73 be a good choice? Would love to get some thoughts....

Ric,

Get the performance pack, comes wth the 3.73's. I'm with you on the stick, I never actually learned to drive an automatic.

The concept is simple. An automatic is just like a stick, only it is not any fun, shifts when you don't want it to, and did I mention no fun? OK, fine. Paddle shifters help some.

Thank you, I needed that today.

You forgot to mention millennial anti-theft device, that's pretty good too.

It also works well as an "anti-wife" device. I'm sure you can imagine my heartbreak when I tried to teach my wife how to drive a manual, but she didn't like it and thought it was "scary" so she refuses to drive it. Mission accomplished.

Hold the door... That's great, my wife can't drive stick either; she's scared of the whole car.

I just got my 2017 GT with Performance Pack. The 3.73's are really too low. I thought it would be, but to get the Performance Pack brakes (what I wanted most) and stiffer suspension you have to take the 3.73's. For just driving around with 3.73's you might as well start in 2nd gear.

I believe 3.55 to be the best gear for fun and performance.

Consider the California Package, as you get the bigger front splitter and nice rear spoiler.
And if you're shopping cars on the lots, I found a lot of the higher spec'd Cali Package cars had 3.55 gears already.

The Performance pack is a really good bargain if you are planning on tracking the car or if you just want to have a good suspension. But I have noticed that many of the real performance enthusiasts with the PP option spend loads of money replacing the springs, dampers, sway bars and especially the super heavy wheels. With that being said the drag racers love the 3.73 rear gears and the larger radiator. The track racers like the transmission, brembo brakes and radiator. But the PP is ultimately a list of items that are good for track but not for drag and things good for track but not for drag racing.

Make up your mind what you'll be doing with the car and get the PP if it gets you close to optimum and if it doesn't then get what you can and add the rest.. Not exactly easy but it's the way Mustang owners have been doing it since 64'.

If you're a drag racer, you don't want the Performance Package or manual transmission.
You don't want the bigger (much heavier) Brembo front brakes. You don't need the stiffer (heavier) sway bar. etc.

I have an 06 GT, auto w/ 3.21's, would 3.55's make a difference in performance?
