Latest news on the 2015 Mustang!!!

According to Ford inside sources reporting to Edmunds.com, The 2015 Mustang is set to loose at least 400lbs off the current body weight, but that’s not all.

A 400LBS Lighter, 15 Inch Shorter 2015 Mustang

Up until now, we have only been able to speculate about the next generation S550 Mustang being a smaller, more nimble vehicle. Now we have some solid evidence to support the findings. In addition to dropping 400 pounds in curb weight, the same inside source is also reporting a smaller in length 2015 Mustang–slicing off ~15 inches from the total size. This will undoubtedly have a positive impact on the 6th generation Mustang’s gas mileage and MPG. How much it will impact fuel efficiency, is still a mystery.

How this will play out with regards to interior space is yet to be seen, but given the tight constraints of the current Mustang’s back seats, one would wonder how much more room there is to loose from the interior compartment. For those of us who keep the rear seat belts buckled year-round, the prospect of loosing a little more real estate isn’t much of a concern, especially if that means dropping 400lbs.

2015 Mustang Dimensions vs The 2014 Mustang
Width: The 2015 is said to have a “10%” (~6.5 inches) shorter in width compared to the 2014 Mustang.

2014 Mustang: 73.9 inches wide — 2015 Mustang: 67.4 inches wide

Length: The 2015: 8% (~15 inches) shorter.

2014 Mustang: 188.5 inches in length and rides on a 107.1-inch wheelbase — 2015 Mustang: 173.5 inches in overall length

Weight: 2015 is set to loose ~400lbs curb weight.

2014 Mustang: 3,617.8lbs curb weight (V8 GT with Auto transmission) — 2015 Mustang GT: 3,217lbs curb weight

Pairing Less Weight With the EcoBoost 4-Cylinder Mustang
The drop in curb weight was brought on by two developments on the automotive world–Ford’s need for a more fuel-efficient fleet of vehicles and Europe’s tight vehicle sizing constraints. Given that we’ve heard reports and we have a video of the 2015 Mustang with a turbo’d 4 cylinder under the hood, its only natural to speculate how this new “SVO” will perform.

If the Edmunds report is true and the new Mustang sheds 400lbs of weight–not including the motor–the turbo 4-cylinder would have a curb weight of around 3,000lbs and be pushing somewhere around 300-350 horsepower. Comparatively, the last 4-cylinder turbo’d Mustangs–the 1986 SVO–came in at a curb weight of 3,049lbs and had a power output of 200 hp (149 kW) @ 5000 rpm 240 lb·ft (330 N·m) @ 3200 rpm. Throw in the addition of an IRS and shorter overall length, you have one completely overhauled pony car. Look out, there might be one formidable 4-banger with Mustang logos blowing the doors off older v8s when the 2015 model year Mustangs start rolling out.

The Coyote V8 Will Return in 2015
It’s not all a loss for the die-hard V8 crowd–in addition to a turbo 4-cylinder, the 2015 Mustang will also be produced with the current Coyote motor, possibly with a bump in power to between 450-475HP. A 2015 prototype videotaped doing test runs around the Dearborn, MI area had a V8 and sounded as good as ever, producing the low, muscle car growl we’ve come to expect from the beloved Mustang. The current V6 is set to return as the base model Mustang. The turbo 4 would be the middle ground while the V8 GTs would still be the premium model.

If this is all true, there's no question in my mind I'll be upgrading the moment these are released. I mean wow, if the new 5.0 is in fact ~3200lbs w/ 450HP or so, she'd be competitive with the new Stingray.

Is the model shown still a concept? If it is, I am glad that I've got a '13. I respect the weight loss and power bump, but the looks are too....Audi? for my tastes.

From my understanding, the mach 1 is coming back for but it will be for 2016 or 2017 and also in 2016 or 2017, the gt350 will be an actual ford model since theres no more gt500. And apparently the gt is coming back too before the decade is out. Apparently this has all been "confirmed", but you know how that goes

Here my 2 cents. If the picture is an indication of what is to be. Then the euro stye is definitely there. Making it smaller and lighter makes me think Ford is going to faze out the V8 and make room for the eco 6 as the premium in the future. The biggest upside is the 3200 pound 450+ HP GT... The Camaro and Challenger will need to up HP to 525 or lose about 800 pounds just to try and keep up!!! Other than the new GT being a beast. I am 100% satisfied in purchasing my 2014 GT.

---------- Post added at 09:52 PM ---------- Previous post was at 09:48 PM ----------

I also heard a rumor from the salesman at the dealership. That Ford is manufacturing 1000 2014 1/2 Mustangs to commemorate the true 50th. Has anyone heard this rumor?

I don't think ford will ever get rid of the V8, the technology now gives it the power and gas mileage. I could see a lot of mustang fans going ape s*it if ford puts more focus on the v6

To much weight, they should put a naturally aspirated 5.8 in the new mustang!

The reason why you dont see anyone putting a v-10 in a mustang is because the extra weight would create a poor handling situation even with a rear irs set up!

Hmmm
Turn it into a 2 seater with a mid mounted engine? Or read mounted.
But by then it's not a mustang :p

I've driven a v10 fox. Seemed about right to me.

You wont see anything from Ford bigger then a 5.0 after the 2015 model hits the lots..fabrication allows all possibillities including a 5.8 swap. This would be my engine of choice if i had unlimited funds and know how!

Right... But there will be a I4 in 2015. How does that belong in a muscle car? That is if you want to get technical.

I think an I4 performance engine would be cool for the mustang. Technically the mustang isnt really even a true muscle car, plus the backbone of the mustangs popularity was because it was the first car with a huge options list. Thats the whole point of the mustang... A little something for everyone

Mustang is not a true muscle. I'm assuming you said this because of the various engine options less the V8. Then you can say pretty much all the late sixty and early seventy cars and cars of today that have an optional V8 are not true muscle cars as well. Most or all of them had the option of 6 or 4 cylinder.

What does muscle in Muscle Car mean? A: Big power V8.

So your telling me the 429 cobra jet is not a true muscle car because it is a mustang. Or the 662hp GT500 is not a true muscle car because it is a mustang. I guess the Camaro is not as well seeing how it is the Mustangs direct competition same with the Challenger.

I guess American Muscle has to change their name to American Almost Muscle. don't take me serious just joking!!!

I always thought of the pony cars as a sub-category of the muscle cars
It's a different type of muscle

Plus, if mustangs weren't muscle cars, then why is AM called American MUSCLE????

The Merriam-Webster dictionary defines muscle cars as "any of a group of American-made 2-door sports coupes with powerful engines designed for high-performance driving."

Sounds like Mustangs fit this description pretty well.
