New to the game

I have an 89 lx 5.0. It has BBK under drive pullies, BBK 70m throttle body and spacer. BBK cold air. And flow master cat back. I just ordered BBK x pipe. It's also an AOD with shift kit. Any suggestions so far? How should the car run?

Welcome! Well sounds like you are on your way. What exactly are you looking to do with the car? What are your goals? That would help us help you!

I'm currently on a budget. I'm looking for a low 13 second street car. Is that out of reach without doing the top end?

I don't think that's too hard. I suppose it depends what your budget actually is. Honestly you might want to focus on some of the things people tend to over look. Like better suspension, tires ect. Putting it to the ground can easily get you some better times. Also, if it is purely a weekend car/track car, you can start pulling out interior parts to reduce weight. Get rid of the spare, ect. That's free mods.

The car has 2" drop springs. I'm running Nitto nt05 on the rear 255/40/17. I like driving the car and would prefer not to pull any interior out. Sometimes it makes the 80 mile drive to work, so would hate to get stuck without a spare. I get what your saying though.

Gotcha. Well you could always go a few different ways. Budget top end, find a wrecked explorer and rob the heads and take them to a machine shop and get them freshened up. Then do your own port and polishing. Tons of YouTube vids out there on port matching ect. Then get a nice little cam and see how she runs.

You also might want to look into a higher stall converter. That will help you launch better.

Again if you handy, not in a hurry, you can easily find stuff here and there and do the work yourself. Labor is where cash starts to really fly out the window

Awesome! That's very helpful on top end. Now to the converter. What am I looking for? The car needs help getting out of the hole. I already have 377 in the rear.

I'm not a pro on which one to install. I'm more of a manual guy. But I had a auto in a 69 mustang with a 351 Windsor at one time and the engine builder recommended something like a 3000 stall converter. Because of the cam I had he wouldn't even warranty the motor unless I got the converter. But man you could hold your foot on the brake and rev it up to 3000 rpm and let off and that sucker would rip. I know they are good investments, but as to which one is best for you? Not sure. But maybe a quick search here in the forums could get you a better idea.

You have been a lot of help and I appreciate it. Saturday morning I'm doing a rear main seal on the Lx. Then leaving the car up in the air as the x pipe will be here Monday. I'm excited to hear how it sounds.

Let us know how that install goes, and if possible, post a sound Youtube for us to hear it!

Instead of doing the Quick Reply, click Post Reply button. On this window, there is a Manage Attachments button when you scroll down. Let me know if this helps.

You have to make sure the picture isn't a huge size. Like 12 MB for example, I have had issues getting big pictures to upload. I try to keep it under 1 MB.

Is it a daily?

Gears and a torque convertor would be my first choices to hit that 13 second mark....

Also, imp i don't believe aod's are good transmissions, heard and seen so many things happen to them.. Are you interested in doing a t5 swap?

I know you stated you were on a budget, but t5's are nearly everywhere.
