Best Way to Trace Rattles?

Hi all, I have a 2013 GT, and I have a couple of rattles. One is a tinny rattle that seems to come from under the car. It happens inconsistently, so it seems to be hard to diagnose. I thought it might be the heat shields, and it seems like there are 4 aluminium pieces on the bottom, of which, I removed two (easy to get to).

I'm asking on that one because there are two parts still there, and I kinda still hear the rattle. I wanted to see if there was anything else it could be.

The second one is from the Door. I have the premium sound package, and i hear a metal piece on some songs. if I push or tug on the door panel, it goes away. Also it comes from the middle of the door panel. There's nothing in the map holder, I checked. Any tips?

Question... does the rattling noise happen when driving? or can you physically move the car by pushing on it and hearing it

Hmm, it's more like it happens when the car is 'on'. I don't think I can reproduce that sound while off by moving it. It's still a pretty bad tinny sound rattle between 2k and 3k RPM.

Might check the exhaust.

Loose hangar or bolt or something on the exhaust somewhere

That's my thought too, but the exhaust should be somewhat floating anyways, right?

It seems to be a bit better since I was able to remove the rear heat shields... If I could have seen where the upper bolt was located for the front two, maybe I would have eliminated the rattle all together, or at least, had one less area to suspect.

Are there any common trouble areas for exhaust hanger vibrations on the S197?

a length of hose is often used as a mechanic's stethoscope. I would be leery of keeping heat shields off. If you isolate it to a shield 1st remove/remount it sometimes that is all it takes then if that doesn't work you can try putting a little bend in it. For the door panel look at some of the speaker install threads on how to remove the panel (hint there is a screw behind the handle) the panel comes off easy.

Good luck mine has several I deal with by doing the following:

1. Mash right pedal with aftermarket exhaust
2. Turn up radio
3. Ignore.

The linkages going to the lock pins on my door can rattle, typically with bass from the speakers (probably from the subs being in the doors).

OP, you might also try jiggling/pressing the lock pin and handle to see if that affects the door rattle.
