Difference between muffler and exhaust

I have a 2014 v6 that I'm looking to add some sound to. I'm looking at the borla stinger, mainly because it's not too loud and there's supposedly no drone. But lately I've been seeing mufflers I can install for half the price and get almost the same sound. What are the reasons for going exhaust over muffler? Remember that I don't care to much about that 8-10 HP gain.

Difference between muffler and exhaust

Muffler is part of the exhaust system. Are you talking about axelback or catback systems?

What Recon said...and neither will give you any HP gain.

I have Bassani axle backs bought used and for that price I like them, but there is occasional drone.

Muffler is what dampens the sound. The exhaust is the entire system from manifolds back. There's not a muffler or complete exhaust system I know of that will gain you 8-10 hp

If I could do it all over agian....I would just have an exhaust shop fab one up from the mid pipe back.

That way you can get a custom made X or H pipe and have what ever muffler style you want...Believe me....I've spent close to $1k in just the mid pipe, resonators and axle back exhausts....labor too....still not happy.

Seems like custom made **** is way better. But to each their own. Its your money and just like anyone else is here going to say...do what you want to do not what others say....oh and of course the other crowd is going to mention....why not the GT????

Good luck.

If you're not on the highway much, drone shouldn't be a big deal and cheaper exhaust might suite you. One 20 min ride with mufflers that droned, right around 2k (highway speed) convinced me Borlas are worth it! I have the touring catback system which has the resonators. I also have over axle pipes w/o resonators that makes the system louder but still no drone. Custom isn't a bad idea. Shop around local shops and see what they can do.

One benefit of an exhaust that is made for the car is some company's (borla, magnaflow, etc.) claim the mufflers are custom designed for the cars for ideal sound, no drone, etc. not sure if it really matters.

The only downside of buying just the mufflers is an exhaust shop is going to charge to install them and some charge a decent amount for this especially if you have it welded.

The reason I like the vehicle specific exhausts that clamp on is that when I sell the car I can easily put the stock parts on and sell the aftermarket ones.

I believe he's talking about buying just the muffler and having a shop cut out the old ones.
