Question Radar Detectors

Just curious of what radar detectors some of you guys use, i know alot of people think there a waste of money but since ive owned one i feel as i can never drive without one, right now i own a Cobra 9440, it works okay(no tickets so no complaints) and ive been able to tests it's range to some degree, but it does give it's fare share of false alerts of which ive gotten used to and reconized the spots. nonetheless ive been really tempted to snag a decent Escort or valentine detector as ive heard nothing but really awsome things about them. ones thing that also is making me wanna snag something newer is the toher day i was on this 3 lane highway and was behind this guy going 48 in a 55(pisses me off) and i was just about to drop to 2nd or third and hammer-down past this guy but i saw this cop tagging people up ahead with his radar gun, and i was getting nothing on my detector. maybe it dosn't pick up a lazer thats not directly pointed at you? anyway not sure, but was somewhat frustrating. Anyway i think im done with my novel lol, anyone care to share?

Re: Radar Detectors

Valentine 1....my favorite feature is the fact it tells you where the source is...in front, behind, or to the side. Plus it is upgradeable so if a new technology comes out, it can be upgraded without having to buy a whole new detector.

Re: Radar Detectors

Lasers are extremely hard to detect, if they're not pointing it right at you. If your detector beeps for laser, chances are, you just got clocked. I used to have an Escort 8500. I really liked it. I've considered getting another one, but I just never have. The V1s get lots of praise, but I don't have any firsthand experience with one.

Re: Radar Detectors

ya if you want to stop lazer you need a jammer. and the ones that actually work are not cheap

Re: Radar Detectors

i watched like a 10min video comparing lots of the "top notch" detectors last night. between the V1 and the 8500 the Valentine really had the upphand detecting lasers, but kinda like Mark said, usally if even if u get a split second warning about being tagged by a lazer, chances are ur not gonna have nearly enough time to go from even 80 to say 65. lazer jammers+ good detector FtW? the dealer at the dealership i work at has one rigged to his truck along with a Escort 8500 and some built in detector aswell, he said he's never gotten a ticket accept one occasion.

Re: Radar Detectors

I'm more concerned with radar than I am lasers. I've never once gotten a ticket while on an interstate and I know I've been clocked on the interstate doing at least 115 once lol.

All my tickets have been off radar in Huntsville.

Re: Radar Detectors

well the majority of cops(atleast around here) seem to use radar, the only cops i see using laser are the motorcycle cops(we hate them lol) i think most the cops would prefer to stay in there nice warm car with there cofee&donuts(i know i would). anyway highly thinking about grabbing a refurbished passport 8500 for $150 =\

Re: Radar Detectors

The cops around here LOVE laser. but i usually dont speed too much anymore anyway. i just watch for the usual speed trap spots that i know of and slow down before i get there

Re: Radar Detectors

the trap on 12 between the split and oneil is always laser. The hope is that you get some deflection off another car before you get there. Otherwise, you're toast.

It's getting bad around here tho. Can't drive anywhere without seeing 10-15 cops it seems.

Re: Radar Detectors

I don't use one.

I've only gotten one ticket. I think the car next to me was actually doing the speeding.

With the economy being so bad, they're just trying to make money anyway they can. They know everyone speeds, so why not profit off of it!?

Re: Radar Detectors

They are making profit off it by having trucks park on the side of the road and take your pic as you speed by, then send you the ticket in the mail. Most of the cops here are too lazy to get out of their cars for tickets....they'd rather sit there on their cell phone while watching 3-4 people blow through a red light than to write a ticket.

i agree, there is always one spot (and i always forget about it) out here on I-5 where a truck sits on an over pass, i used to ahve some cobra detector and caught them way ahead of time but that thing went off all the time, it was eventually stolen outa my car when i first moved up here (a welcome to this city gift i guess...) so i've never ran one in the stang. i do miss it, but i try not to speed much cause i'm sitting at a nice price on my insureance with the stang and i can't afford a ticket or i won't be able to keep it, lol

Re: Radar Detectors

I could dig up my Anarchist cookbook and look up the components for a radar jammer for you if your interested. They're actually cheap to make. I never bothered though because I know where all the cops sit.

Re: Radar Detectors

I've never had one myself...no tickets on my record. Meh...just don't fly everywhere you go. I'm willing to bet I do more driving than the majority of ppl on this site.

Re: Radar Detectors

I used to commute 50 miles each way for work. 100 miles a day sucks when gas is $4.50 a gallon, haha. That commuting was in LA traffic though so most of the time I was going 8 miles per hour.

Re: Radar Detectors

I run a Valentine 1 Radar Detector and a blinder M45 X-treme Laser Jammer, works amazingly, I love my jammer, my buddy is a cop and he showed me how it works, when it hits the car and the jammer gets the signal it sends back all sorts of different numbers ****s it all up

Re: Radar Detectors

Ill get it out as soon as I get my tower back up and running. Right now Ive been procrastinating hooking it back up because I have to reset the BIOS every time I turn it on. Ill see if I cant get on it sometime this week.
