Linux is an alternative Operating System using the Modified kernal code based by Linus Tifolds in Sweden using the Open Source Project some years ago.

The Back end is essentially a unix core, very stable and securable. Where as MS Windows essentially comes with all services and processes running on install, most Linux OS's have to have the services enabled.

It also has a very nice GUI that resembles XP, go figure!! Since Xwindows has been out since 1996!

Some flavors of Linux are Red Hat, Mandrake, and others. I like linux, there is a lot to learn for the ordinary person because the command line is very powerful.

Actually the "shiney" linux distros (mandrake, fedora, suse etc) come with a HUGE amount of services/daemons running at install and you can pick up a great performance gain by shutting a few down, or doing the advanced install and disabling them.

That said Fedora Core 3 is rocking my box

I've got a copy of Red Hat, but I haven't used it since I finished my Unix programming class nearly a year ago. I've been using Windows since the DOS 6.0/Windows 3.1 days, I'm too accustomed to switch (and all the games come out for Windows).

I am currently playing with linux on a older computer of mine to get accustom to using it before I put my server system in my house online. I am going to have my entire house wired from a central location with access ports in every room of the house to the server. it will also control my Home theater, A/C and Heating and Cable TV

Quality goes down, easedropping and security becomes a bigger problem. Cost goes way up.
