NYC Gets scared ... This is in horrible taste I think.

I can't believe they would do this without notifying people in the city first.

White House Apologizes for Air Force Flyover - City Room Blog - NYTimes.com

Quote:
Updated, 11:59 a.m. | An Air Force One lookalike, the backup plane for the one regularly used by the president, flew low over Manhattan on Monday morning, accompanied by two F-16 fighters, so Air Force photographers could take pictures. But a lack of awareness about the flyover led to the evacuation of several buildings in Lower Manhattan and Jersey City, and perplexed officials at the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey and other authorities were inundated with calls from anxious ferry passengers, office workers and residents.

Jim Peters, a spokesman for the Federal Aviation Administration, said “the photo op was approved and coordinated with everyone.” Notification was made in advance to the mayor’s office, “including its 911 and 311 operation centers,” the New York City Police Department, the New Jersey State Police, the United States Park Police and other agencies, he said.

Later on Monday morning, the Police Department acknowledged that it had been notified about the event but said it had been barred from alerting the public. “The flight of a VC-25 aircraft and F-16 fighters this morning was authorized by the F.A.A. for the vicinity of the Statue of Liberty with directives to local authorities not to disclose information about it but to direct any inquiries to the F.A.A. Air Traffic Security Coordinator,” the Police Department said in a statement.

The event was scheduled for 10 to 10:30 a.m. The plane is designated by the Defense Department as a VC-25 but is recognizable to the public as a Boeing 747.

that is so screwed up. Do they know many people that lived through the first one that have PTSD, and they just screwed them up all over again.

At the same time though, anyone could easily tell it was the Presidents plane. I mean, when is Air Force one going to get hi jacked besides in 24?

Still really stupid to keep it secret.

Re: NYC Gets scared ... This is in horrible taste I think.

Well, when you're inside a building and all you catch is a glimpse of a plane whipping by, you don't exactly have a chance to analyze the details of the plane. At over 200 mph, a plane passing behind buildings is not going to be like a still photo.

Besides, when the last history you have of that big of a plane passing by your building that low was when it took out the towers...well, odds of you doing a full analysis are going to be low. You're going to react first, then get the details.

Re: NYC Gets scared ... This is in horrible taste I think.

I agree. But I don't think it was a situation where someone caught a glimpse of a plane and then threw everything in there air and ran. I mean, I'm not excusing it. It was stupid as **** not to tell people it was going to happen. At the same time though, (being I wasn't there in NY on 9/11... whether that makes a different... I still watched it unfold on live tv) If I saw something like that happening I'd at least take a few seconds to look at the plane to figure out wtf was going on. Once I saw it was Air Force One I'd probably wonder why Obama was wasting his time flying around the Hudson River.

Re: NYC Gets scared ... This is in horrible taste I think.

No. Maybe I am in the minority here because I love civil aviation and can pretty much tell you any Boeing and Airbus plane you put in front of me.

Much less one that flies the President of the United States around.

It's a 747 for one. Only select few airlines fly them. None of them use the paint scheme of... wait for it... the United States of America... AKA Air Force one.

Plus it's being escorted by two fighter pilots. I guess people don't think about things like that. You have a 747 flying around outside painted up to look like Air Force one with two fighter jets around it. It flies around in circles. There is nothing on the news about it. No alerts.

I guess our country never learned anything from 9/11 and our alert system sucks balls. That 747 with two fighter jets outside just snuck up on everyone. Or maybe it's because Obama is a Muslim and anti American and he was planning the attack?

I already stated it was dumb not to alert people. What more do you want? Do you want to impeach Obama for this act? I mean ****. It was a 747 flying around that just happened to look like the Presidents plane. I guess our security does suck after all. Maybe time for Patriot Act v2.0.

Re: NYC Gets scared ... This is in horrible taste I think.

On top of that, if a B-52 bomber was flying around people would more than likely have had the same reaction. Somehow they would have convinced themselves someone hijacked an American Bomber.

Too many people act on emotion and while I'm not saying it's not acceptable for some people who personally lived through the incident first hand and on scene, the majority of people are no different than me and you that are complaining about this. They just get to call themselves New York citizens and pay higher taxes, use toll roads and deal with more arrogant bastards than we do here in the south.

There are several "stupid new jersey-ers" that also ran out of their buildings as the plane flew by their buildings. Several eye witnesses have posted on svtp and they too left their buildings.

probably, than again, it has 4 engine pods and its big, otherwise no one really knows the difference. I can tell the difference in most modern military aircraft and can tell basic differences in commercial airlines, but even though painted a dark grey with U.S. Air Force written on the side, i don't think anyone would say, oh its ok, its just one of our military planes...

I wasn't there, in fact i was on the opposite side of the country, but i watch the 2nd plane hit, right on live tv, not knowing what was going on. People like to say how freaked out they were when this current event happened, yet i don't see any thing reminding us of what happened or how to stay strong as a country. During WW2 pearl harbor was attacked and almost all of America stood still. now everyone just goes on with their lives, it was just a huge news story and thats about it.

I would say America has to get its **** together, but i'm sure some of that would involve not being "politically correct" which i personally think is a 2 edge sword that we are falling on.

also, with 2 fighters chasing down the plane, if it possed ne type of threat they are supposed to shoot it down... dunno if anyone forgot about that detail...

Kind of like when they followed that small plane from the canadian border all the way to like Minnesota? It is not an instant shoot to kill on site directive...with all the PC BS they need to go through to communicate, talk them down, etc, etc, etc....it is highly possible for a fighter to follow a plane until they learn of the intentions. It's not "Shoot on sight" at all.

But that's ok, the people in NY and NJ were stupid for reacting on impulse instead of breaking down all of the details, studying the flight pattern and plane details, having a meeting with the rest of the building before finally determining whether or not it was a threat.

wasn't really meaning shoot on site, but if they follow the plane for a good while and its heading is straight for a city and about 1k feet, i'm sure thats a bit differn't

I really dont lay the full blame on the white house for this one.

from the guys quote in the article, He says he notified state and local authorities...so why didnt the state and local authorities tell anybody?

No need to have a big press conference nationwide about it its localized to one area. I guess the state/local authorities didnt feel the need to tell anybody either?

Also, why would you go out and openly say its the backup/fake air force one? Just takes a minor detail to give it up and next time they use the real air force one as a decoy the fake one with all the important people on it gets blown up,etc...

Just trying to put a spin on things.

Just trying to put a spin on things.
Just to bring your spin full circle...

Quote:
The Police Department confirmed that it had been notified about the event but said it had been barred from alerting the public.

Also, it's not top secret that there are 2 AF 1's. In fact, there was a full hour or 2 long special about the fact that anytime AF1 flies, that there are 2 planes that take different routes. It was pretty detailed. You just need to guess which one is the right one.

I'm sure the reason they said it was the backup AF1 was because it was the NY Times reporting it. By saying it was the backup, it will remove any instant thoughts that the pres was on the plane. The NY Times will go to extreme lengths to protect their hero.

They were planning to do this in Washington also using the capitol as a backdrop, it was been canceled .
And that photo op cost us $380,000.00

Who cares about it costing 380k? I think that is one of the better things the government spends their money on. I bet the pictures turn out great. I'd love to own a poster size version of Air Force One to hang on the wall.

John McCain is one of the first people who wanted an 'investigation' into how much the Photoshoot cost. This is the same guy that voted to spend 700+ Billion dollars on TARP and he is worried about 380k dollars?

Nope. Why have they gotten boring? Because I don't talk about how liberals are the only ones screwing up the country?

Do you not feel it is very hypocritical to authorize 700+ Billion to bail out businesses and turn around and complain about 380k when a Democrat is the one authorizing that spending?
