Sequence of events

At the United Skates of America at 46th Street and Shadeland Avenue an officer checked the plates of a suspicious minivan. It was stolen.

The officer started to follow the minivan east on 46th Street.

The minivan started to accelerate, the officer turned on her lights.

The pursuit began, detouring up to 47th Street and then back to 46th St., speeds measured 60 miles per hour at I-465.

At times speeds reached 80 miles per hour.

When the minivan hit the railroad tracks right before Franklin Road it went airborne 10 to 15 feet off the ground before crashing broadside into Lawrence Officer Craig Herbert's cruiser, on duty and sitting at the intersection. The forceful impact pushed the cruiser 50 feet into a parking lot, killing Herbert instantly.

thats ashame...people can be so stupid sometimes and it ends up hurting people doing good

thats the one thing my parents are worried about with me trying to be a nj state trooper...getting killed in the line of duty...but theres an equal amount of risk in each job

but to come to an end like that, its just senseless

some people think, oh no, being caught going this fast i might as well run and possibly die... but they never think about them killing somebody else in the process

thats a shame. on a side note, if you are a passanger in a vehicle involved in a chase that IS NOT stolen, can you be arrested? b/c you don't really have any control over if the driver runs or not..... just curious

I would have shot the teen if I was the other cop. Regardless if I was going to go to jail. Atleast I knew that ******* was not going to breath another breath.

The child led the officers on a chase for about a mile? I hardly call that a chase; i've seen longer chases than that on foot. Don't they teach the officers that when suspects are diving that fast, slow down and let them get ahead. If they don't see you they'll probably slow down after a while so as not to look suspicious. Also, how does a van lose control and boadside a cops car at 100mph after a railroad track? The only thing I can see is that the van became unstable at those speeds so when he went over the tracks he got a little crooked and skid left or right. But why would a cop be to the left or right of a vehicle? Shouldn't the officer be behind the vehicle? Unless for some reason he was stopped at the side of the road and the person ran into him.

thats horrible but yeah i think that the cop who was killed wasn't in pursuit he was just in the wrong place at the wrong time. At least that is what i got from it.
