Thinkin about a laptop this summer...

i love my custom PC but i would like a mobile computer because i go home a lot and plus its a hassle to take down my computer. i have a 19 inch moniter, nvidia 5900xt, a gig of ddr ram, soundblaster audigy with 5.1.. you know.. the works... well.. at least in its prime. however, i am havin trouble finding a good price/power laptop. i was lookin at a lot of places.. sony vaio, ibuypower, dell, alienware, etc.. and i can't find any good ones. i dont have deep pockets and i am a man that needs power.. at least alittle power. on a laptop i would like a pretty fast processor, 512 or higher ram, a half decent vid card, etc... anyone know any good deals or companies? seriously.. i am pretty much clueless in the laptop world.

I like my hp pavilion with the widescreen as well, 1.6 GHz athlon, 512 ram, 80 gig hd drive, Geforce graphics card, and dvd/cd-rw

The best thing though is being able to take it where ya want. I'll be using it during test and tune sessions with my xcalibrator to tweek the tune

you can get a lappy for dirt cheap but DONT expect to game on it for cheap... if you want to game you best be ready to foot the bill....

I would just build a nicer pc if it was me, but if you got to take it with you.... try to scan the papers people have to sell their lappys all the time, just make sure she is good to go. There was guy at school that had a brand new one for 400 bucks, probably had a need for some alcohol ( college )

why not just keep your PC and leave that where you stay most often and use the laptop for the interweb and to check email, etc.

I have had the same Dell for the past two years. I paid a little bit for it, but I have a 2.8GHz, 512mb, dvd+rw, ugxa+ moniter, etc I can game if I want to. My vid card is only 32mb though, but still good cause i dont play those HUGE games. I think I paid like $1800 shipped and after tax from dell 2 years ago. I would keep checking their website www.dell4me.com and they throw in free upgrades quite often.

Mine was free

I got it through a lemon clause in my service plan on the last one...

I think it was around $1500 otherwise

i dont need to upgrade my pc.. the next upgrade is prob processor and vid card.. but i usually get them together and i skip a new generation of vid cards before i get a new one.. geforce 2, 4, etc...

i want at least something similar to a 9700 pro 128MB... you know.. something with alittle power.. but not something amazing.

If you wanna do that, I'd buy a cheap laptop (but one that doesn't crap out, I'd ask around for a cheap yet effective laptop), upgrade the card, put more memory into it, hopefully it'll come with a 16x DVD player on it.. then you're good.

No point in buying a portable DVD player when it's got a smaller screen, crappy battery life, and it only plays DVDs.

on laptops, you really can't upgrade much, since everythign is so small, a lot of it is integrated........you can pretty much only upgrade the ram/ hard drive as far as i know..............however, you were asking about price....i paid around 2700.00 for my laptop.....yeah, pretty expensive...but if you want top o fhte line and ableto play games on a laptop, like was said in a previous reply, you better be ready to pay.....

i want to pay less than 2 grand.. im lookin for average power. i dont want a ridiculously fast processor.. i just want something around 2GHz, at least 512MB of DDR ram, and at least a 128 video card. i dont want to game on it.. i have a pc for that... i just want something that is powerful but not REAL powerful. i want something where i can work on it and then when i get bored, open up a game and play a bit. im not talkin farcry or anything.. im talkin like.. warcraft III, age of mythology, etc.. stuff along those lines. im not a big fan of gaming on laptops.

somebody qouting on itmes they arent sure are true or false i see, you can get higher than 64mb on video for a laptop, I do it everyday with Dell M70/D610's for my work.

So yes it is possible, but not sumthing you can do yourself unless you decide to replace a mainboard all togethor since most are integrated!

putting alot of money into a lappy is a waste of alot of money

to get a laptop thats up to snuff with the lastest and greatest it costs so much more than just getting a decent lappy that your better off getting a decent one and buying one like, every 2-3 years or so than buying one every say 3-4 and paying twice as much for it.
