| my car rocks now!
after all this *****ing and complaining about my wastegate needing changing, i decided to go out and try to change it with the turbo still in the car
all went well, other than this stupid as E clip i couldnt see, and could barely touch
i swapped wastegates, bypassed my boost controll selenoid, and took it for a test drive
i roll up into 3rd gear, i floor it, the gauge reads 3-4psi, then slams down to 17psi
the car is badass now, it pulls like never before, the car screams, the exhaust note is more aggressive, it burns the tires off through first and second gear from a slow roll, its just a night and day difference
tomorrow im getting a K&N filter that mounts right on my VAM and eliminating the airbox

stock, theyre supposed to put down 190 at the flywheel in a 5-speed car (auto's got detuned), in 87, motortrend said they got a 16.3 out of one at the track, but my friend had a low mile one, bone stock, and got a 15.88 out of it
as of tonight, with my open downpipe, added boost, and eliminated airbox (thing looks like a kitchen utensil), i should have 190-200 at the wheels
not bad for free mods other than the K&N, which im getting for 15 bucks

the K&N is on the car...that is another amazing difference all in its own, the turbo spools up so fast now
next is a BOV and exhaust, if the turbo spools fast now, i imagine that a 3" exhaust will be crazy

i gotta start saving for that, its not too expensive, a downpipe is 100 bucks or so, i need two 45* bends, a muffler, and ill use a 2.5" tailpipe untill i get a 3" fabbed, shouldnt be more than 350 bucks, but its more than i have
in first gear, at light throttle, the thing already makes 2-3psi, i gotta relearn how to drive this thing, from a roll in first, it goes sideways, and stays sideways untill i grab third

That reminds me of a porting job I did for a friend of mine,
had a decent looking 2.3 OHC head, I ported it for him
and he was getting it re-built, and the mag'ed it and it was cracked!
All that work for nothing...
Get the head checked before you get any porting done TBird man!

funny you mention that
i was talking with a buddy of mine, he pulled his head, had it mag'd, and it showed a crack, since it didnt leak, didnt have any problems, he had it ported anyways, he ran that untill he parted the car out
apparantly these heads crack in "non-fatal" area's, and dont show any problems
if i have one ported, id grab an N/A head, since theyre similar castings, and work with that, since they have less cylinder pressure, and heat to deal with, having a turbo bolted to the head adds much more heat to it

Hmmm, maybe this would be OK too, but I forget where the crack was.
It was off an NA car though, odd that it would be cracked!

its in the castings with these heads, they just get weak in area's and crack, same thing with the exhaust manifolds, but guys dont have any leaking issues
guess it depends on the severity and location of the crack

I'm sure there are better years, the mini stock guys run them up over 200 BHP
and race them pretty hard.
