Anyone into camping/backpacking?

I've never really gone before, but me and three friends are planning on going on a 6-night trip to cumberland island (off the coast of GA near FL) right after school gets out in may and I am really looking forward to it. we are going to be hiking 3.5-10 miles to our campsite where we will be staying. there are wild horses, gators, armadillos and lots of other cool stuff. one side of the island is a fresh water marsh and the other side is on the atlantic

3.5-10 miles? lol, that's some difference. Wear comfortable hiking boots.

Camping is awesome. I wanna go now.

it all depends on what campsite (there a 3) we get. we have been talking to a lady that works there and she says not many people going camping during the end of may so hopefully we will get to stay at the first campsite which is only 3.5 miles from the ferry landing and is right on the atlantic.

screw comfortable... maybe on the bottom of the foot.. make sure they're slightly tight around the rest of your foot.. you'll thank me later... even SLIGHTLY loose hiking boots.. and you'll be regretting going on the trip..

snug is your best bet...

aside from that, I hike all the time and love it.. be sure to pack plenty of water/water purifiers.. don't overweigh your pack.. 25 lbs MAX or you will be worn down after a few hours.. (of course if you're hiking a fairly short distance.. IE 3.5 miles only.. then camping for the other 6 days pack as much as you can to comfortably survive the 6 days.. xbox w/car battery and inverter and 6" battery powered TV included )

... yeah.. don't forget the bug spray

I absolutely love backpacking/camping. Haven't done it in a few years, but trying to get back into it. The last trip I did was in Virginia, did ~10 miles a day, was a 10 day trip. Man it was nice. If you're gonna be hiking for any distance, buy your hiking boots now, wear them everyday and get them nice and worn in. I use the good ol walmart hiking boots, seem to last longer than anything else. Nothing sucks worst than trying to break in new boots on a hike, you end up with some nasty blisters.

Nah, just get a good fire going. I've camped out on the MS river, if you wanna see some big skeeters, come over here, you can even take some of the bigger ones home as souveniers.

i went backpacking for a week through the rocky mountains on the colorado trail. It was me and 12 other guys each carrying 75-90 lb packs, up and down mountains... eating ****ty food, drinking moutain stream water mixed with iodine, no showers, wading through moutain streams, digging our own crappers, and wiping our asses with pine cones. We peaked a 14,134 ft moutain along the way, and ended up hiking a total of 45 miles throughout the whole ordeal. It was probably one of the best weeks of my life. Easily the most challenging thing Id ever done (this was the summer of my junior year in HS) but it was so rewarding. I loved it.

iodine tablets taste like crap when mixed with water, we are bringing an MSR miniworks water purifier. Since we are only gonna be hiking twice (once there and once back) we are gonna suck it up and bring a ton of **** so that he live comfortably for the 7 days we are there - we might even bring a camp shower
