Civil War History?

Do you know it? I don't feel that I really do, so I'm going to make a concentrated effort to edumacate myself. I know that there are people out there that really pride themselves on that slice of history, any of them visitors here?

Re: Civil War History?

That is scary Mark because I was thinking the same thing the other day. I know a little here and there, but not nearly as much as I do about WWII, much the same boat you are in I am sure. If you come across some good books or whatever let me know, as I will do the same.

Re: Civil War History?

Watch the History Channel. You learn a lot of crazy and interesting stuff about it.

Here's a quick summary:
  • North went all liberal and hurt the South's feelings for being inconsiderate about their economics.
  • Union and Confederates start taking up states to "be the bigger country" and have the most political influence.
  • Lincoln is a racist but frees the slaves anyway.
  • South says "**** this" and concedes.
  • North says "The hell you don't". The war begins and brothers start to fight brothers.
  • Lincoln sees a play.
  • South loses simply because they can no longer fight on.
  • Lincoln is assassinated.
  • For almost a century and a half the South believes the Civil War is just "on hiatus" and it's only a matter of time before the South will rise again.
  • A bunch of conspiracy theories around Lincoln emerge, but his wife was still fat, ugly, and mentally unstable

All this from a Yankee, enjoy.

Re: Civil War History?

I've been motivated to start learning more about the revolutionary war after going to boston and seeing all the historical stuff up there.

Re: Civil War History?

If you want to learn some about the civil war, rent the movies Gettysburg and Gods and Generals. Also, the history channel rawks when it comes to this sort of thing.

BTW, the war was NOT about slavery. It was about states' rights and also South Carolina seceding.

Re: Civil War History?

Yah, WWII/Vietnam always held my interest more through school...as stated above, the history channel has plenty of shows about the civil war, I should start tuning in more.

Re: Civil War History?

i like to think that i know an above average amount about every american war - except the mexican war. but, i use the term average loosely... as i think the average american couldnt even summarize most american wars sadly.

i wish i could remember who said the quote but there is a quote that goes something like:

I don't know how world war 3 will end, but world war 4 will be fought with sticks and stones.

it was on a video game, i remember that, ill see if i can find it.

No because then all I will hear is how something should be done, but we can't go to war and when we do we should pull out.

As for the moon landing, when I was younger I never really thought it was that amazing. I always thought, so what, I can play video games (and just the technologies we live in). I thought it was back in the 70's (and '69) and with Disco then it seemed not that big of a deal.

But now, I watch footage, I read, I think. I know a little bit more about the sciences behind it and for me to think it can happen again is unbelievable. It was such an amazing accomplishment to send many men up there, for them to survive and then come back - it blows my mind. Makes me proud to see the American flag waving (although it can't actually wave) up there. The only flag too, and the only people to walk on that surface. Let the other nations battle for Antarctica, we have the moon.

For the whole conspiracies out there, History Channel has those specials and pretty much disproved all of it (the conspiracies). In fact the astronaut's placed a mirror on the moon that a Observatory has continuously shot a laser beam to and received back even to this day. The angle also had to be very precise when they did it since the small compilest deviation in angle would shoot the laser beam way off from the receiver on earth.

The aluminum rod the American flag is attached to, the top piece did not extend out all the way which is why it looks so short.

The onboard computer to fly the lunar module took up a space of 1 foot cubed, which was considered compact and radically small at that time. Most computers then took up a large room. It also had as much memory as a pocket calculator does today that you would buy at Wal-Mart.

Google also now has "explore the moon" when you check at their maps. They have videos of the landing and all. NASA re-taped over the moon landing, so now Hollywood is spending millions to compile all previous footage and remaster it, making it look better then the original broadcast in '69.

As for the civil war, I know nothing

this was it! thanks, i haven't played that game for a while, the 2nd one is supposed to come out sometime...

sorry for the thread jack, i don't really know much about the civil war, i know my 8th grade history teacher loved info on the civil war. I don't really know a lot about any war really... basically who started and who finished it. As far as WW2 goes i pretty much just know info about the equipment they used (planes, tanks, guns ect.)

Wasn't that quote also in Call of Duty 4 Modern Warfare. I think it, along with other quotes would pop up after you died in campaign mode.
