That is exactly why I got out. I did 9 1/2 years in the Navy, most of it as a single guy living on the boat. I got married to a fellow sailor who had a kid from her first marraige. Then we had a kid together and the money and military BS was infringing on my family so I got out and got a civilian job.
Doing what I did in the Navy as a civilian nets me about 4x as much.
Oh I got exactly one month of tax free pay in all the time I was in.
