Any Military experts here?

I know we have a few military people here. I have been doing my family history for the last 5 years or so and have a question about what his military stuff on my great grandfather's headstone. I know what some of it means but not all of it. It says

PFC CO B 108 TN HO & MP
World War I PH

Here is what i know:
PFC = Private first class
CO= company
B = his company
108 = his division or whatever you call it.
TN = tenesse i believe??
DON'T know what the HO stands for ??

MP = Military Police

Don't know what the PH stands for after world war I.

If any one can help me out i would greatly appreciate it.

Are you sure that HO and MP aren't his parent's first and middle names?

Re: Any Military experts here?

Positve. I know his parents name. After some more searching and the inverting the colors of the pictures The HO is actually HQ. I'm guessing for headquarters. Meaning he was stationed in Tennessee as his main base? Still not sure why the & would be in there though.

Re: Any Military experts here?

Hrmmm...I don't know of any big bases in Tennessee. Fort Campbell is close to TN, but still in KY. Maybe he was a reservist or Nat'l Guard?

Re: Any Military experts here?

Not that i'm aware of. I have his discharge paper but it doesn't say anything about reserve or nat'l gaurd. Though i'm not sure it would. But i never thought to see if there even was a base in Tennessee. That makes it a little more interesting... and annoying. lol

This stuff is not easy. My family never wanted to be recorded i guess

Re: Any Military experts here?

To give you an idea how screwed up this stuff is here is a little info.
My great great grandmother came from norway when she was 16. Married a guy in 1893,he supposdly died when he fell while washing windows(his profession),married a schaffer(my name) in 1895, my great grandfather was born 1897, they were in a poor house in 1900 without her schaffer husband. In 1910 she was a servant to a wealthy man, in 1920 she was married to him. Then she passed away in 1922. There is no birth certificate for my great grandfather, I have the marriage record for her marriage to schaffer, but no death or divorce. There is no record of them together other than being married. I have my great grandfathers marriage record, military discharge, and his obituary. Thats it.

And this is just a quick little bit of info there is tons more that makes it all wierd and confusing. The 2 people in my family that are alive that could have known him were told he was dead before they were born. Even though he died when the youngest one was 15

GRRRRR

Re: Any Military experts here?

ah ha. TN HQ & MP stands for Train Headquarters and Military police. He was here in IL. He was responsible for loading trains with weapons, ammunition, building materials and medical supplies. And was an MP that set up gaurd posts and stuff when there wasn't trains to load. When he got sent over seas he was responsible for getting those supplies to bases and to the troops at the front line. This is how he got gassed i'm thinking.

On a side note, i learned today that I can get my grandfathers and my great grandfathers military records and they are going to re-issue me both of there purple heart medals and papers for no cost Its been a pretty good day.

The one for my great grandfather is old enough to be considered public records so its just a matter of sending in the request papers and waiting 3-4 months

But for my grandfather i have to have my dad fill out the papers, and send a copy of his birth certificate, and a copy of my grandfathers death cert. Then wait 3-4 months. But at least i'll have it eventually.

Re: Any Military experts here?

MP training is in Ft Leonard Wood missouri. HQ & MP are HQ division, all military police are designated to their HQ's in whatever place they are stationed or based out of.

I used to do it. When MP's would orders to a unit, they would be transfered to Headquarters Squadron when I was on the air base.
