Drag racing will kill you...

Quote:
Sandra Chapman/Eyewitness News

Indianapolis, May 29 - A drag race combined with alcohol proved a deadly mix miles outside the Castleton Square Mall Sunday night. Police said a 20-year-old driver lost control of his car, hit a utility pole and sent his passenger airborne.

Michelle Gaines witnesses the crash. "When he hit the pole, he went way up in the air and as he was flipping, the car caught fire," said Gaines.

She said it was worst than a movie. She saw terror in the eyes of the 20-year-old driver coming toward her, wrestling to regain control of this black Mercedes. The car headed straight for her until he hit a curb and started a deadly chain reaction. One passenger was ejected from the car.
"I've never seen anything so terrifying and horrible as that," she said.

Witnesses report the car speeding for miles. Police are questioning the driver of a white Ford in connection to the accident. It's believed the two were racing.
Another witness, Rhonda McPheron said the driver endangered other mostorists on the road.

"I didn't see him racing against anyone, but he was weaving in and out of the traffic from all the way down at Keystone at the Crossing to Castleton," said McPheron.

Police said a 21-year-old passenger is dead and felony charges are pending for both drivers.
IPD Capt. Phil Burton said, "We do suspect alcohol was involved in this crash."
Another eyewitness to the crash, Michelle Gaines said, "It was really a sad, a sad thing to see."

The driver of the Mercedes -- 20-year old Nathan Ray -- is undergoing treatment at Methodist Hospital. Police are withholding the name of Ray's passenger pending family notification.

The juvenile driving the Ford Escort was arrested at the scene on reckless homicide charges.

lol, don't think that story will stop me from racing at stop lights.. but I don't race when it's unsafe, or when it's in town... and I don't go above 70 very often AT ALL... maybe 3 times ever in my car.

I still can't believe they're calling 'weaving in and out of traffic' a drag race.. the people were racing or they weren't but don't hate on drag racers..

On the street I never shift outta second (to ~55 or so MPH), and there's never anyone around where I live so eh ... The track is where its at.. I'm there usually each week...

you would cange your mind if you had to drive two hours to a track because of traffic. Then get there and run two bloody times because there are so many people already there.

i think there is a time and place for it.. just gotta use your head. sometimes street racing is fine but others you should pass up the opportunity.

i just look at it like street racing has gone on for years and years... its just F&F made it more a public thing that anyone with a civic will do now. Back in the days of the old stangs, chargers, gto's, chevelles... there was so much of the stoplight drag racing, god i would have loved to live in those times

my friends dad used to tell me how the cops of my hometown used to have these decent cars.. i forget what they were though.. and they used to drag race their cop cars with the muscle cars across this bridge in my hometown (Reinken Bridge).
