hey JC...

we have a 97 rio red SC'd cobra in for service where I work

it cuts out at 5200 RPMs..

more like a rev limiter than anything else..

any ideas what the problem could be?

it hauls *** til that point though which is what we don't understand
it has plenty of fuel pressure..

the MSD ignition box is disconnected.. connecting it, the car wouldn't even start

we have no clue what the deal is, guy recently bought the car and is complaining about it cutting out..

any personal experiences you may have had like this? (doubtful but I'm hopeful lol) the guy wants his car back, but wants it fixed lol

does it have an aftermarket chip that could have possibly changed the rev limiter?

is it more of a fuel pump shuts down sort of problem or just starts losing its power?

I'm sure it does but fords scan tool isn't showing anything off with the PCM calibration

and there's no codes, even with the MSD plugged in, which there would be...

Is the bypass plug installed on the MSD? If not, I would bet the dip switches in the MSD are set to cut spark at that RPM. Also check to make sure the tach adapers are installed correctly and no connections are loose. Remember that if you bypass the MSD unit, you must bypass the Tach adapters too...

Aside from that, the only other reason would be a programed rev limiter via the chip or flashed directly onto the computer.

One more thing to check would be spark blowout. What plugs? Gap?

Giver me some answers to those questions and I may be able to help further.

plugs are gapped to ~.045 each
everything seems tight on the MSD box, it is mounted directly to the condenser however.. any chance the high heat could have screwed something up?

When it cuts out it feels just like it's bouncing off a limiter, the powers' there and strong, then just vanishes

The gap on the plugs should be no more than 0.035". I would recomend the NGK TR6's or Autolite 764's for this application.

Also make sure that the MSD box is moved from the engine compartment to underneat the passenger side seat where it will be nice and cool. I personally burned 2 MSD DIS4 boxes while they were in the engine compartment. Moved it under the seat and it ran well for 2 years before I sold it. To be honest with you, even though the features of the MSD are very neat (like the rev limiter, theft function, and two step), the quality of the product is very sub par. I removed my MSD and replaced it with a KB BAS and have not had any spark problems spinning the car to 7600 RPM...

In this case, I would be it is spark blowout due to the large plug gap. Take care of that and watch the car pull all the way to redline as it should.

Good luck !!!
